Yoga is more than a physical discipline of keeping fit. It's an ancient concept, and has a lot to do with the philosophical and the spiritual. So therefore a lot of Yoga-related terms or types of yoga you'll come across. Don't get confused. Hatha Yoga, Kundalini Yoga, and Astanga Yoga are the most common disciplines of Yoga, which give you the strength, relaxation and flexibility - the combined benefits one looks for. But there are various other disciplines and kinds of Yoga.
Some of this may be considered and taught by some Christian churches as being Hindu and with meditation can open you up to evil spirits. I have not found this to be the case. Just the opposite. Meditation has opened my mind to visions of Jesus and Angels to paint.
Yoga is difficult at may age because of arthritis but my wife is Christian based and Spiritual and teaches Yoga, so don't buy into all that you hear. It has not affected our lives negatively. It is very physical and rewarding as I see it.

As opposed to contributing all the bias and naive lip service, all one need do is a little research. Instead of being lazy and talking unfounded trash, just look up yoga, its origin and its purpose. The fact that it's spiritual and contrary to Bible scripture is no secret. Anyone with minimal intelligence knows it's spirit based. If Christians choose to follow their Bible, only the shallow and narrow minded would object.

Holy cr#p. This is just plain nutso! I'd never heard this before, and some of the answers you've gotten are straight out of the dark ages. Fortunately there are some pretty enlightened answers in there, too. But it sure shows you how far we have to go as a species.

i love yoga! i just find it very relaxing and yes it is spiritual but not in any bad way! it doesnt take away from my religion (catholic) at all, i dont think of religion or god when i do yoga, i just concentrate on the yoga. i think of it as a hobbie, and i would never say its allowing the devil into my life! well not me personally anyway!

The Epsicopal church where I was confirmed had a world-famous yoga teacher (Lilias Folan). The church sponsored yoga classes taught by her. When I went from this church to a much more hard-line, fundamentalist church, one of the first things I was taught was how evil my previous church had been. This surprised me. They used this yoga teacher as one of their examples as why it was evil. Yoga, to the minds of these new 'Christians' I had chosen to hang out with, was a way of tapping into 'the darkness.' Yoga, in the minds of these fundamentalists, was not based on the blood sacrifice of Jesus Christ, and therefore was evil. I came to understand this as the litmus test of everything, from authors (Kurt Vonnegut: evil! Hannah Hurnard: good!) to movies (The Way We Were: evil! Jesus of Nazareth: good!) and even people (Dalai Lama: evil! Jerry Falwell: good!) One deacon in the church told me that this was why jazz is such evil music. "Just watch a jazz musician play," she said, "They close their eyes, and draw from all that darkness inside. Because if they aren't saved by the blood of Jesus, there is nothing inside but Satan."
So I avoided all books, music, movies and people that didn't center entirely on the blood of Jesus, and Him crucified. (Yes, I can still speak the buzzwords) This, in effect, created a very closed system. I had been 'saved' and I knew 'The Truth.' And everything I read, saw, listened to or thought about, could only reflect this 'Truth.' Anything else was evil, and needed to be purged from my life.
If you understand how cycles of life work, you understand that any system needs to be open in order to thrive. If you only take the same material and recycle it over and over, you are living in a stagnant pond. It took me quite a while to discover that my mind and life had become a stagnant pond.
My life today embraces information and truth wherever I can find it. Yoga is a great way to stretch the body, and to learn mental discipline. Meditation (zazen, paricularly for me) is a great way to practice acceptance, and to discover the eternal in every moment. And Kurt Vonnegut, bless his heart, wrote some wonderful universal truths about kindness, honesty, and integrity.

I don't think it's means of inviting the devil in- rather it leaves one open to deception from him, who searches for victims that he can turn away from God. it is a means to prepare the body for the spiritual exercises, with less obstacles, in order to achieve enlightenment. the practice of yoga is based on the belief that man and God are one. it is little more than self-worship disguised as a high level of spirituality. the question becomes, is it possible for a christian to isolate the physical aspects of yoga as simply a method of exercise, without incorporating the spirituality or philosophy behind it? i don't believe so. yoga originated with a blatantly anti-christian philosophy, and that philosophy has not changed. it teaches one to focus on oneself instead of on the one true God. it encourages its participants to seek the answers to life's difficult questions within their own conscience instead of in the word of God.
