The best thing is exercise at least 4 days a week, both aerobic and weight training.
Your body has what is called a "set point" that is your current weight, if you go on any diet then your body thinks you are starving and slows your metabolism. Only exercise can alter the set point because it speeds up your metabolism.

i lost 35LBS by eating a healthy low fat, low calorie diet. I ate nothing over 5% fat. I ate not more that 1500 calories per day. I cut out sugar and ate fresh fruit and veg 5 or more times per day. i also took up swimming. I challenged myself to do five more lengths every time i swam. You cannot lose weight by not eating, because in the long run you have to eat again at some point. you could try joining a slimming group or is their a friend that could join in with you, or if not support you by going swimming, jogging etc with you. I found it fun giving myself goals to achieve. That was a better buzz than eating and i started to look good too. good luck.

body needs 50cal/hour just for basic functioning (like when you are in coma) and thats 1200cal/day.
when you deprive your body all you lose is water weight and muscle and slow down your metabolism so you end up having higher body fat percentage.
you have to realize that you have to make permanent changes in your lifestyle (diet and exercise) to get permanent rusults.
find daily calorie intake calculator on the net, enter all your stats and it will tell you how many calories you need a day to maintain, take off 300-400cal off that number and thats how much you need to lose.
eat 5-6 small meals a day (eat every 2-3 hours - it optimizes your metabolism)
5-8 servings of fruit and veggies a day
8 glasses of water
have complex carbs for breakfast - they give you energy
have protein (lean meat, legumes etc) for dinner - repairs muscle
cardio is the only fat burning exercise (running, jogging, swimming, spinning, elliptical etc) 4-6 times a week for 30-50min (ideally 45min because the first 20-30min body burns carbs and only then starts burning fat), light weight training (more muscle=faster metabolism)
dont consume foods that are made of white flour (white bread, cakes, pasta etc.), sugar loaded foods (cookies, icecream, candy etc) and nothing fried, oily.
ofcourse you can spoil yourself once in a while with a little treat:)

A great way to lose weight is to count Calories like crazy or have a lot of small meals instead of three big meals and find fun ways to exercise like dancing around your bedroom to your favorite song.

just healthy food(fruit vegtables, fish) and lots of exercise these faddy diets do not work and usually you just end up gaining back more weight than you lost, and as for not eating that is not a diet thats an illness, wouldnt recomend it.
