The VO5 will work fine. Water it down in a 6:1 ratio of water to shampoo, don't get it in his eyes. The only time I add a drop or so of dish detergent to the above mixture is when I have a dog who has oil in their coat (got under the car.. etc). Dish detergent strips oil and dries the skin.
Make sure you rinse and rerinse and just for good measure rinse again.
I've been grooming and showing white dogs (Samoyeds) for years and often use diluted human shampoo to wash them.

Being a vet med major and having worked in a vets office for a few years now the ONLY reason to use a dish soap like dawn on a puppy would be because they 1) got into something that is oily and wont wash off with regular puppy shampoo and 2) will cause them harm if not washed off quickly. We recently had a puppy brought in that the owners, who didn't speak english, basically killed. They had bought Heartz flea medication at the store for a 45-80 pound dog. They put the entire box, I believe 4 vials, on the puppy as well as 2 flea collars. In that case, even though we had puppy shampoo in the hospital, we used Dawn to clean the puppy as regular puppy shampoo wouldn't get the stuff off fast enough.

From a groomers standpoint dawn is a good shampoo for dogs, but only for certain reasons. Fleas, extreme skin oil and sticky items like candy. But on a dog that young that has I'm assuming none of those it would cause more harm than good. His skin is still very sensitive and avoiding harsh shampoos is best. Human shampoos are one of the worst for dogs because of the extra ingredients and how they work on the hair. Your best bet is to get a oatmeal shampoo. The natural emolients and conditioners in oatmeal are great for dogs with sensitive skin and clean wonderful. So look for a oatmeal dog shampoo for puppies. Also remember to rinse very very well. Esp on the belly and privates. Any soap residue left there can cause problems and its not comfortable. Hope this helps.

Stop, Don't! Dog shampoo is formulated for dogs. These soaps are way to harsh for the little pooper! Dachshunds get skin issues fairly easy as it is. Using harsh soaps only helps to feed the conditions and reeks havoc on their skin. Please go to a good pet store and ask for recomendations. A small bottle goes a very long way! Most of all, Enjoy that pup! As it will triple all the love you give it right back to you!

Hi there!
I would personally not reccomend you do this, becasue dish soap has some harmfull chemicals that will harm your dogs skin, (it will make the skin, rough and irritated and itchy) or if they get in your dogs eyes, they may blind him. Also, if it dribbles into his mouth, he would get poisoined and it would cause serious internal injury. If you want to give your dog a bath and dont have any dog shampoo, use regular shampoo for people, and just dont put it on his head. You could aslo use regular hand soap, that might work, too.
Good Luck!

Neither - dog shampoo is the only product formulated for dogs. A dog should never be bathed unless absolutely necessary because you're stripping all the oils out of their coat, drying both it and their skin. Once a month at the absolute most.

Nooo!
This will strip the natural moisture from your dogs skin/coat! Not to mention can be very irritating to your dog and cause skin rashes.
Use a shampoo specifically for dogs
:)
