And, if you're going to make something up, is it best to try and make it a reasonable guess, or make it something which needs magic to make sense?

I can't stand not knowing an answer. I say it is better to ask the question, listen to someones personal opinion of what the answer is, do your own research and come to your own conclusion. If you are being asked, it is absolutely okay to say you don't know the answer but I feel it is your moral obligation to find out the answer if you can. If we are speaking in spiritual terms I can only say that we all have our answers and none of them are right or wrong, as spirituality is a truth born from experience, perception, and logic. Yes, I said it. Logic. And attempting to disarm someones difference of belief by attacking the way that they reason is cruel. Teach by example, inform don't demean...
But that's my opinion. And it's definitely what I try my hardest to do, which is why I have to take breaks from this place a lot -.-

This depends upon the situation you find yourself in.
One thing I have found that if you are in a room of ten people and you do not understand the question or what is being said at least two others are in the same situation and to frightened to ask.
You can not know everything about everything there are huge gaps in your and my knowledge and education. So learn by asking. There are all sorts of sub games in this but if you do not ask you remain ignorant and that is the crime

It would seem that you touch on the origins of many religions. "I don't know what that thunder and lightning are so I will tell my children, 'that is the work of God' ". Answers to questions that have been incomprehensible, have used "magic" or "God" as an explanation for an event since the beginning of time. Personally I prefer the "magic" of science and logic.

I agree wtih you. This is why I do not understand atheist. The way I see it you can believe there is no god, believe maybe there is a god, and believe there is a God.
Atheism is the belief there is no god
Agnosticism is the belief that god might exist
If no one has absolute knowledge, then you can not say there is no God.
There should be no such thing as people that do not believe there is not a god. Atheist should change to Agnostic atleast. Without absolute knowledge there is a possiblilty there is a real God. This is

Having read your question, I think one must categorise and philosophise to enable the correct answer, not with standing mathematical and religious reasoning, then yes your assumption is correct assuming that the medium is withheld and the median is the elementary figure in the hypothesis.
Hope that answers your question !

I admit I don't know, or make a guess and clearly say that it is a guess and give reasons for it.

That's what my husband says we have had many wrangle when he says I don't know instead of thinking through a logical answer. Really annoying when someone says I don't know all the time...makes you think they don't bloody care either. Lol
