Well, there are a lot of differences. A physician's assistant can do anything from paperwork to checking vital signs to drawing blood to giving shots. They work almost exclusively in offices. A respiratory therapist depends on the level you are at, since there are many levels in this career, while a physician's assistant is usually limited to one level. An RT may work in a doctor's office, in private homes, in clinics, or in hospitals. They may do things as simple as giving treatments or as complicated as setting up respirators/ventilators in ICU. Both jobs involve a lot of patient contact, some unpleasant stuff, and a lot of responsibility. But as you can guess, there's a lot more earning potential with the respiratory therapist, since with more education comes more money.

momanuke needs to do the homework. A PA perscribes medicine, does full physicals, can do hospital rounds and just about anything a Dr does except surgery. It is a true mid level care doctor.

RT is a good field though. Lots of demand for them, and it will not be changing any time soon. More older people means lots more need.

a PA would probably have more job opportunities. There would be more openings for someone in that line.
