minor tends to be used more for sadness

major for positive, romantic

open fourths and fifths will have more of a chamer sound
also try using the modes (dorian, phrygian, lydian, myxolydian, and locrian)

Whole tone and pentatonic scales also can be used to attain a more exotic sound.

Minor scales work well for melancholy attitudes. The blues' notes, flatting and then raising the third, and striking the flatted seventh, are great for either the blues or intense playing.

Minor sixths and ninths work well in expressing versatility in harmony. All in all, it depends on the individual.

My motto is, "When you feel like playing, play with feeling."
