First, to those of you questioning how she can be homeless and using a computer; she said she's homeless--not friedless and not incapable of using a computer at a bookstore, coffee shop, library etc. With the push for improving access to technology, there are litteraly thousands of free access computers here (Chicago) that can be used by anyone.
As far as helping with a place to stay, depending upon where are you are (city, state) you can contact various social service agencies, churches (some have missions), Salvation Army, Goodwill, etc.
good luck to you!!

Hello,
Very good idea to use internet to find help !
Firstly is this free site for free accomodation www.place2stay.net, it is for travellers for some days, but you can.
Then I have read some ads on www.gumtree.com for a free accomodation e.g. by a 70 years old lady in London, nothing to do, just for some company... (of course be careful about any ad where it is a young man proposing the same and where sex could be the deal or if we ask you an overload of service). Other accomodation in exchange of some baby-sitting, or gardening, dog walking... Browse the ads please by couchsurfing (put 0 at maximum price or 1 pound a week)..
I don't know about charities at the place you are at the moment, but maybe are they overbooked, try then to knock at the door of religious homes for girls and women (catholic for example), they usually make pay, but if you are broke and if they consider you are honnest by the way, they might propose you an immediate accomodation in exchange of some volunteer help.(they always need volunteer help and they like to accomodate lost lonely sheep like you...he he he, that's a way to earn credits for paradise. Always let them imagine that something, maybe God, inspired your actions, bad - for experience of the punishment - or good ones certainly directly inspired).
They will certainly ask a lot from you and spy on you as well, and you will have to fight to have some free time, but once you have the job, you tell them !Hasta la vista!
I think even you could knock at a mosquee and ask for the Imam, that will find you a kind muslim family to host you (of course you might have to be even more acceptable and innocent than for the nuns, better try to stay much less before they know you and don't speak too much about yourself, listen when they will try to convert you, and of course share a really smaller bedsit in the middle of the children crying). Because for muslims it is a crime not to give hospitality whenever required...
A last thing in case of big emergency is some not sensitive public places, or private offices that are not surveyed at night by a guard or by security systems, you can eventually hide in the toilets just before everybody leave and once the doors closed, you find an hidden corner and stay there with a sleeping bag.. (but you must be sure that no guard dog will not come to wake you up !!). Think if there is a kind of public building for some organizations like charities by the way (kfff, kfff, kfff), unions, altermondialisation groups, that often don't close at night but have empty offices or corridors, etc..
Oups and ask these people directly as well if they can house you some nights before they leave their office..
Good luck !

I unlike some of the others that responded know that you can utilize computers at places of support for homeless people, or you might be at a friends house crashing and it may be temp. or even at a library. I would suggest you look up shelters first and go from there, good luck.
Go to a city social services office, there is one of Michigan Ave. and they'll assign you a caseworker and get you started.

If you are legitimately homeless through no fault of your own, the Council have a duty to help, but if you've made yourself homeless by leaving home because you were unhappy (having walked out remembering to take computer with you) you'll find it harder. I presume you are staying with friends in the meantime.

I take it you are on a battery operated computer or in an Internet cafe.
Seriously
You could try a live in job if you come from the UK buy the lady magazine or ask your news agent what papers will help for hotels, holiday camps residential maids etc

I'm just curious how a question about being homeless is in "careers and employment." Did someone hire you to be homeless? Is it supposed to be some kind of fringe benefit?
