Protein. That's the short answer. If you want to lost weight, carbs should take a backseat to everything else in your diet. Carbs should be strictly kept to "healthy" carbs, for example, cereals and breads. Leave the cookies and chips behind (although as I did well with the chips - keep it to something like baked Lays or SunChips). Also, no carbs after 5pm. You ask about differences, but these are two completely different components of your diet. You simply won't lose weight increasing carbd. Carbs give your body energy, but unused carbs get converted to fat and stored. Protein aids in muscle strengthening and muscle rehabilitation. But it's also the healthiest way to still get the calories you need while keeping the carb intake down.

If you want to lose fat by working out, it is better to consume foods high in protein, but you must also consume some carbs as well. This is important because consuming protein will help muscle growth as a result of working out. Carbs are important because they actually fuel the workout, but keeping carb levels low will help increase fat loss. It is best to eat 5-7 smaller meals per day, each containing some protein and carbohydrates. This will help your metabolism stay high and keep your energy levels up all day. For further helpful info, I would suggest looking on websites such as bodybuilding.com, they have some helpful diet strategies.
Hope this info is useful.

Carbs supply you with energy, which if not used, is converted and stored as fat.
Protein helps muscle rebuild after strenuous exercise.
If you are working out to los weight, cut down on carbs. This forcs your body to use its fat stores for an energy source. You don't need to increase your normal protein intake if you do not want to add muscle mass.

You need both, but too much carbs puts on weight. It gets converted to sugar. So if you want to lose weight eat more protein than carbs, but you still need to eat carbs for energy.Protein helps with muscle building.

protein (LEAN) is essential to losing weight!!! especially if you arent looking to lose weight, but gain muscle. carbs turns into sugar so i would do a minimal amount of carbs. try to think of it as like if the main part of one of your meals has carbs, then have the rest of your meals with barely any.

Mustard is a secret bulge-buster. This boosts your metabolism and increases natural ephadrine, the hormone in which burns fat. According to Jeya Holly, professor of human nutrition at Oxford Brookes University, just a tablespoon within your food can reduce a flabby waist by 20 per cent!

Carbs only add fat, and protein should be 6 oz at most a day. Veggies and fruits; lots of these. raw is best.

i tried a high protein, low carb diet for 3 weeks, lost nearly 21lbs, and felt really sick (i was 322lbs to start though) and then i went onto a low fat, calorie controlled diet, felt better, and lost a further 35lbs in 9 weeks. i'd recommend a balanced, calorie controlled diet, and take it steady, once you've lost some weight, then increase your protein intake, to build your muscles...
