Ok I am going to ask again since I honestly got some stupid responses that did not help. My boyfriend & I plan to move to NY. We both are merchandisers & our jobs are transferrable. I plan to get my bachelor's in graphic design(already have my AA in both graphic design & fashion merchandising).I have noticed there are more opportunities for me out there in my field. We were looking to move to the Bronx(we have been looking at Craigslist).We both are young, no kids & know we will enjoy NY very much since there is ALOT to do obviously. We know we can make it out there because we will both no longer have to pay for our cars, insurance & gas. I want opinions if this will be a good move for us & will it be worth it? Opinions I would like to hear but please no dumb ones. Will the Bronx be cool for us? What do you all think?

Typical negative responses to the Bronx are based on biased, unfounded stereotypes from people who have never set foot in the borough. Every borough has it's "bad" areas...Please, never take advice on a location from someone whose never actually been there!
MacArthur is correct...Riverdale, Woodlawn, and Moshulu Park are very nice, safe, affluent areas of the Bronx. Though not a expensive as Manhattan, you'll be paying higher rents than the rest of the borough. All the money you're saving on cars, insurance, and gas you'll be paying in rent, food, and everything else in this expensive city.
I've lived in the Bronx my entire life, and I enjoy it very much. I get an escape from the bustling, ceaseless noise and energy of manhattan, while enjoying the variety, diversity, and accessibilty of being part of the city. And i get more space for my money.
Though you'll be living in the Bronx, which is a wonderful choice, much of your time will be spent working, shopping, and exploring in Manhattan. Manhattan can be tough for some people, so you'll want to test the waters before you dive into the city headfirst.
I would recommend visiting the city first....see if you can sublet an apartment for a few weeks (craigslist is great for sublets too!), and see how you respond to: maneuvering through and relying on the subway, paying double/triple for everything, being surround by hundreds of people on the streets & during your commute, and being surrounded by the constant, vibrating undertone of energy that pervades the city at all times.
It will be worth it if you already have a job lined up, know you won't be struggling to feed yourselves and pay the rent, and know that you will function well and adapt quickly to NYC life, pace, and diversity.
Keep in mind, too, that once you become a bonafide New Yorker, you won't be doing nearly as many things a you thought you would. I have yet to visit the Statue of Liberty OR MOMA for godsake. I use my weekends to run errands and relax....all of my time and energy throughout the week is spent working, commuting, and prepping for work & the commute!

The Bronx is an underrated borough to live in. Riverdale, Moshulu Park, and Woodlawn are some great neighborhoods. Needless to say, the Bronx has its own culture that differs from Brooklyn. Yet like everywhere else in the city it's getting better and better year after year.

I agree with everybody who says the Bronx is underrated - it's a real up-and-coming borough- but I still prefer Brooklyn, more nightlife. I think if you two want to live in NYC, you should. It is truly the greatest city in the world.

It's really hard to tell you what will be "cool for you" without knowing anything about your personality, hobbies, current living situation, etc...or what neighborhood you're looking to live in. Woodlawn, Riverdale, and Hunts Point, for example, would be three drastically different environments to live in.

DO NOT MOVE TO THE BRONX IT IS NOT THAT SAFE. if you want a very nice place to live look in Nassau county about a 30 min. car/train ride to NYC. if Nassau is to expensive look into Staten island or Queens.

eww. the bronx. i've lived in nyc all my life and avoid the bronx at all cost. look into brooklyn. the best borough, then manhattan and then queens.
