There's 50. We have some territories that are not states. You might be confused because Puerto Rico has consistently refused statehood status. Washington, D.C. is not a state, nor are the U.S. Virgin Islands, Guam or the Mariana Islands. We don't have a lot of territories, but there are a few. Only Puerto Rico is geographically close enough and large enough to be seriously considered as a 51st state, but they prefer commonwealth status.
