I've heard that the addition of a hitch implies to prospective buyers that you tow things--and therefore have added extra wear and tear to the vehicle. Ever heard anything about this?

Depending on the vehicle a hitch may reduce the value, or it man not affect it. It depends on the type of vehicle that the hitch is installed upon. For example, when I am looking at front wheel drive mini-vans, if there is a hitch installed, I assume additional wear and tear on the suspension and transmission. I adjust the price that I am willing to pay accordingly!
Many SUVS now come factory equipped with receiver style hitches. The fact that there is a hitch on that vehicle means nothing when it comes to value. If there is an electrical brake controller installed on the SUV, then I adjust for the towing, because it is obvious that the vehicle was used to tow!!

No , it should Increase the Value of the Vehicle. Whether you tow anything or not, a trailer hitch is a valuable accessory to have. It gives the Buyer an Option that he otherwise would not have.

Add Hitch To Car

I've heard that myself, and I personally believe it. Unless it's a big V8 truck or SUV made for towing, I wouldn't buy a used car with a hitch on it.

Great question.. I just bought a new mini SUV and am wondering the same thing.. However, if you are smart about it you can always take it off prior to selling it (hitches are usually bolted on)

Sure, "how much towing went on with this vehicle?" is a common question.
