........that they're trying to convince you to accept a "god of the gaps"?

I had this earlier today when my wife and I had two hours with a door knocker.

The point at which he seemed to lose his composer the most was when I pointed out to him that he was trying to sell me on a god of the gaps, even though what he believed in was way beyond that.

I pointed out to him that all christians essentially believed in a god of the gaps, just to varying degrees.

There were many points we raised with him, from evolution to the lack of evidence for Jesus.

Why did the issue of the god of the gaps upset him more than anything else?

Because he is probably not used to people challenging him, were he more seasoned in "debating" "freethinkers "he probably could have put up a better argument.

Most door knockers (I personally have only had 2 in my life) are not incredibly good at thinking on the fly, they basically get a certain message ingrained in them, so they in turn forget to think for themselves.

Perhaps the 'door knocker' was less familiar with techniques for dealing with contentious authentication.

My God has no gaps. There is plenty of evidence for Jesus and creationism -- and I have a few theories of my own regarding evolution.

We cannot judge his methodologies or time frame by our standards but as Einstein said, "God does not play dice with the universe."

You said you talked with him for 2 hours. Maybe he just had to go. I am positive he would have told you that Jehovah has no gaps...and his followers have a complete picture of what is going on now...what went on in the past..and a pretty good idea of the future..
If you wanted to irritate him you probably argued with him until he was tired of it.
We are supposed to reason together..not throw silly phrases into each others faces and say...prove I'm wrong.

I usually try as politely as possible to tell those who come to my door that I have my beliefs and they have theirs and they are not going to sway my faith or conviction. Yes there are those who are very zealous in what they do and I find that comforting that the believe so strongly but at this point I explain I have things to do and I mean no offense but I am closing my door.

He missed out on that day of sales' training in which they are taught to handle objections on the "god of the gaps".

I wish I had door knockers where I live... no such luck.

I do believe in Tony Hawk of the gaps, though.
