Your puppy is a baby dog who is missing his mama and his litter mates. This is normal. If you don't already crate him - do! Use a small crate while he is small. It will help him feel protected and secure.

Put a (washable) towel or blanket and a soft, stuffed animal or two in the crate with him. If you can, put his (small) crate up on a chair next to you in bed so he can be near you and hear your breathing and such. Then, if he whines during the night, put your hand on the crate door and soothe him a bit. This is what I have done in the past. You will lose a few night's sleep, but your puppy will adjust better.

Be prepared to get up and take the puppy "outside" about every two or thee hours as well. They can't hold it longer, and you do not want him to soil his crate. Don't play with him then, just let him relieve himself and right back to the crate.

Enjoy your new friend. Soon he will be a big part of your family.

P.S. Crate him during the day when he sleeps as well, to get him in the habit of sleeping there. Good luck!

Stop giving her water 3 hours before bed and take her out right before you crate her. You need to ignore her cries for attention at night-they have a hold me cry and a I have to pee cry so you will need to listen closely to each. The pee cry is more high pitched. If she is messing in the crate it may be too big for her since dogs usually don't mess where they sleep so try putting up a partition of some sort. Yes absolutely take her out even if she has messed and say go potty. By 8 weeks old she should be able to go 3-4 hours without messing. Take her out and put her right back in the crate without giving her the attention she is looking for other than good job (whether she peed or not when you bring her in). She should stop whining after a week or 2 and potty training all depends on how consistent you are with her. I trained my Dane in a little over a week but some take longer some shorter. Any training requires consistency by everyone in the family-say the same words every time and do the same thing every time. Good luck and ask again if you need anymore info:>)

My Lhasa Apso puppy did not sleep through the night at 8 weeks either. It is normal, primarily because #1 it is adapting to new surroundings, #2 its bladder is small and it needs to relieve itself more often. I was up every 2 hours the first week, then slowly it got better. My puppy is almost 6 months old and she now sleeps 10pm-7am. I read that puppies can be expected to sleep 16 hours a day, and they reach adulthood at 18 months. Enjoy your puppy!

Dogs are actually nocturnal animals, and as a puppy they are going to sleep all day. It's perfectly normal. Give the little guy/girl some time to adjust to your schedule and as he/she gets older they will have the ability to stay up for longer periods of time during the day. Without so many naps during the day they are more likely to sleep through the night.

You've gotten all good answers here. I'll just add that it's a great practice for children. Sometimes, they don't sleep at 8 weeks, or 56 weeks either.

it may be that he has his days and nights mixed up. he's going to want to sleep a lot regardless but try to keep him up a little more during the day and when he takes his nap make sure no one bothers him.

it is missing its mom and litter mates try putting it in a box with a warm water bottle covered with a towel and a clock that ticks this will remind it of a heartbeat and the water bottle will be like laying with its litter mates to keep warm
