I would go with white blinds on my windows and use "color" in my accessories like pillows, picture frames, flowers, rugs, curtains, etc.
You could use touches of black with either turquoise, fushia,or red to brighten the pallet.
Even a darker shades of gray arecontrasting enough to work.

Well you can go safe, and do the trim and blinds in white, adding Black accessories for a really modern fresh clean look, however keep the clutter down to a minimum with this look, adding some color to the accessories like Burgundy, black white will tie it all together, shag rug to set the conversation area is a really trendy look.
I like to add a deck and wrap some landscaping around areas of it, bottom of the steps, each side add a bed, and plant an upright arborvitae, they are able to be trimmed and kept at a manageable height, and they come in spirals which look very chic. i have my own group in home and garden maggietuk2003

If I were you, I'd buy crisp white blinds. I love how white trim and blinds freshen up a room. Add color with your accessories -- window treatments, area rugs on top of the carpet, pillows, tablecloths, candles, etc.
As for the backyard, we have a deck and we HATE it. It's high maintenance and as a gardener, I don't like how it separates us from fully enjoying our backyard. We've already gotten estimates on having it ripped out and replaced with a stone patio. One guy who gave us an estimate said he's getting more and more calls from people who want to get rid of their decks and replace them with patios.

Yellow would liven up the prison cell you have described.
Fresh flowers and simple , modern furniture in a light color or pattern.
Look for fresh artwork to hang on the walls too.
Congrats on the new place.

Use a regal purple or a hot fuschia.....that will make the carpet and walls pop!!! Also will make the room larger looking and rich. Go with stone landscaping.......no maintenance and you have more time to enjoy your backyard!!!
