When the Israelites were about to inherit the promised land of Canaan, some expressed a preference to settle in the land East of the Jordan River. These tribes were Reuben, Gad and the half tribe of Manasseh. This they were permitted to do, provided they go with their brothers to fight with them to dispossess the inhabitants of Canaan.
The rest of the tribe of Manasseh chose their inheritance on the West side of Jordan, like their brothers.

before the conquest of Canaan, the territories of Sichon and Og were conquered on the East side of the Jordan. this, while not really part of the holy land, was going to become part of the nation of Israel. the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and half of Manasseh opted to settle in this land - provided they would still fight the wars against the Canaanites.

A reference would be helpful here - but I am assuming that you are referring to the prophecy that Jacob gave to Joseph who was sold into Egypt (Joseph shall be a fruitful bough, his branches shall run over the wall). Jacob promised Joseph that part of his progeny would cross the "wall" meaning the ocean. They did. The Aztecs are related genetically to people in Israel.
Or are you referring to someone who married outside of their tribe (like a Levite marrying one from the tribe of Manasseh)?
Possible reference to number of children of Manasseh (which incidentally are numbered with the children of Ephraim and together comprise the tribe of Joseph.)
More details would be good.

½ of the tribe (plus Ruben and Gad IIRC) decided to stop and swet shop before reaching the Promised Land. The other half crossed Jordan like the other 9 tribes.

Menashe and Efraim were the sons of Joseph, who was one of 12 brothers, hence the 12 tribes of Israel. The territory belonging to Joseph was given to his two sons, and thus each one was a half tribe.
