they are trying to trick you. You are allowed one free credit report per year from one of the 3 credit reporting companies by the government.

If you are using a site like freecreditreport.com. they ask for a credit card number because they automatically sign you up for additional services for the future, and you have to cancel if you don't want them.

If you are using annualcreditreport.com, they do ask for some personal info to verify that it's really you, but don't charge you.

the credit report is free. but to get it you have to subscribe to their service. that is why the credit card.

Because if you don't have your credit card then they won't do it for you. Or if you have never been to that place they need it.

it's not free, it's a free trial. It's only free if you remember to cancel the free trial before the end of the trial period
