I'm with you, Lady Suri. I see those questions every day and anyone who says they haven't seen them isn't looking. How about a glass of Mogen David wine? ;>)

1) Some Jews, mainlyOrthodox Jews, are awaiting a personal,"actual person" Messiah who willnot be God Incarnate. Many o f these Jews believe that he will be a descendent of King David
Other Jews believe that the Messiah is a personification of the whole Jewish people in their role as a light to the nations
Other Jews believe that the Messiah is an "eschatological Israel"
Other Jews believe that the Messiah is a "mythic device" to give hope to the Jewish people during periods of oppression
Other Jews believe that there have been a series of Messiahs who have led the Jewish people in times of need
Others Jews(at least two I know of) believe that there will be 2 Messiahs who will come at the End:one Davidic and one a Cohen, who will restore sacrifices in the rbuilt Jerusalem Temple.
Others ,some Hasidic(I think a type of Lubivitcher) Jews, believe that a recently deceased spirtitual leader of theirs was the Messiah and will rise from the dead.
Others believe that Jesus, who is not God Incarnate, is "as much of a Messiah as we'll ever get"
Others,Messianic Jews( who tend to be orthodox Evangelical Protestant Christians but not exclusively)believe that Jesus/Yeshua is the Messia and He will come again and may of these believe that Jesus is God Incarnate).that Jesus
Others find the very concept of the Messiah to be dangerous and "cultish"and "Shabbati Zvi should have been the last claimant"
2)depends on how Messiah is defined: restore the whole World with peace,,justice and prosperity, overcome the enemies of the Jewish people, usher in the Messianic Age,rule Israel, and so on.
3) Jesus is not seen as having fulfilled the prophesies and role of Messiah
Is"a false and failed" Messiah
is identified with persecution of Jews
There is no personal Messiah
Jesus was not a perfect observer of Torah laws and customs nor the perfect fulfiller of mitzvot(righteous deeds and 613Torah laws)
He did not bring perfect peace and triumph of the righteous over the wicked when he came or since

I like the answer that said just respect their views and that should be enough to explain yours.
Apparently it's not, because these questions do come up over and over again. And regardless of how many times we answer them they still come up. Anyone who claims to have picked up a book or read the bible would be able to answer these questions.
I especially like the question of if Jesus isn't the Messiah then who is he? As though there is a direct line to G-d and all of us will have a preview to the coming attraction. Please.
No matter how many times you answer these questions they will still come, because people want to believe what they want, and when views of others don't fit into their little world view they refuse to learn about them. Period.

It is getting to be so that not even an innocent comment on this site lately can go unnoticed without someone else rushing by to fill up your glass.
I say that as so long as you are happy and content with your religious teachings, then why bother questioning others about what they have been taught? Evidently those who question other people's beliefs are less inclined to be either religious or feel that they religion has failed them time and again.

Cheers -
I agree with you totally. Before people ask a question, they should be reviewing these types of questions from the past. It's a repeat - MANY times over the course of a day.

The questions you listed are at heart identical to the ones on the atheist / pagan drinking list, so your suggestion is very appropriate. Depending on the response, you might want to ask this again later to bring everyone on board.

I think the Jews, atheists and Christians are just about tied with all the inane questions they get asked repeatedly. I don't drink though.

Heh- just make mine a double Jonny Walkers Black label on the rocks :)
But i have stored standard responses to the recurring questions, occasisonally editing them, but just reposting them most of the time since the question is the same as the uncountable times before ....

1. In my opinion, Jesus was simply the first reformed Jew. He didn't intend to be the messiah, and the Christians really got confused as to what "messiah" means.
2. Be a leader, and clarify the meaning of existence.
3. Because he didn't fulfill the necessary requirements of the job.

Hey, it gives us something to do. And I found a neat quote from the Rambam I want to use on the next fifteen occasions I answer those questions.
