Yes, pretty much. Just because the founding fathers were Christians doesn't mean we all are. ALSO, I think we went to war because we have something against Muslims.

It brings to mind the old saying, "money is the root of all evil".
That alone has its irony. We americans elect corporate leaders consumed with greed because we live in a consumerist society. Greed, Greed, and more Greed. We elect politicians connected with massive corporations on every level of government. Rich is never enough for these people. Nothing is ever enough...gotta have more. These same people we elect control our economy, destroy our environment, control taxes and treasury. In God We Trust may have had some merit centuries ago, but now it is truly ironic.

Not that this is going to be the right answer but here goes. Years ago there was a saying IN God We Trust all others pay cash. Yeah I know it is a little lame but in the 70's and 80's you could actually see these kinds of signs in businesses. I am not sure that is what our founding fathers intended but that is where alot of people took it.

At first I didn't see what the big deal was with people complaining about "In God We Trust," but when when you think about it, every country in the world besides the U.S. does not mention God or any spiritual being on their money. Other countries dollar bills more colorful and prettier too.

Yes. It was added during the 1950's during he Cold War so that Americans could feel they were superior to the Soviets. Very childish.
The American gvt is supposed to be secular. The reality is that religion holds far too much power in the country.

Our Nation was founded by forward thinking men who believed in God & the freedom of religion. Religion is part of the foundation of our Nation. There is nothing wrong with putting "In God We Trust" on our money. Yes, we are allowed to think freely that's what the U.S. Constitution & Declaration of Independance & Bill of Rights are all about...freedom against persecution. Many, many, many wars are fought in the name of religion. The U.S. Independence was fought for because of persecution against personal freedoms including freedom of religion. We, citizens of the Great United States of America, by nature of our laws are given the freedom to choose which religion we practice based on personal choice, not a forced governmental decree. Saying "In God We Trust" on our dollar does not automatically stipulate all U.S. citizens must follow a Christian based religion. It reminds us of our forward thinking foundation.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY AMERICA!

Its more about history than religion. As much as people would like to say otherwise, our country is founded and built on Christianity. As a heathen nonbeliever I accpet things like "in God we trust" on the money as a historical tribute rather than an active idiom.

The country was founded by deeply religious people. It is part of our heritage and remains in our currency through all the cycles of secularity and religiosity. There are other historical elements of our currency that bear little relation to today's world, but they remain as part of our tradition.

Hoping you aren't an American--you should know better or maybe your education was inadequate. First, our forefathers based this country on Judeo-Christian ethics. Two, read our Declaration of Independence and Bill of Rights and do a little more reflecting before asking questions like this one.
