Happy Fourth to you as well!!
You most certianly deserve better, anyone who beats you down verbally doesn't deserve to be in your life. Addictions often make people change into someone else. If you feel he's beyond help, then you should move on. Remaining in the current situation will only become worse in the long run.

First of all, of course you deserve better, but it bothers me that you had to ask instead of being firmly convinced of this on your own. Work on that. Next, when you first meet someone you're not really meeting them, per se, but their representative...an "on my best behavior" version of the person trying to put their best foot forward so they can endear themselves to you. This is not necessarily intentional deception; we all do this to some degree. Over time as you face problems and day- to-day concerns, the real person comes out: you get to see how well or how poorly they deal with challenges. Ironically, the real you emerges to him as well and you are similarly evaluated. This is when you discover incompatibilities with your respective coping skills....and this is when people appear to "change". You can always ask probing questions that give you some insight into a person's character and approaches to life, and this is better than the "nothing" many people do. But there is really no substitute for time when getting to know someone, because you could never hope to stumble across every subject that would be important enough to ask about. That's food for thought for the future. Good luck to you.

Yes you deserve better, someone that will make you happy. You are not happy now, do yourself a favor and look elsewhere, you do not need to be with that loser anymore.
