I would gladly punch that women's lights out but that wouldnt really help. Sometimes your face just doesnt fit, no matter what and people will take an instant dislike to you. I feel sorry for your mother. She really doesnt need this kind of treatment.

What about going to a tribunal or taking the matter to a court of law. Im sure there must be another way around this. This women's behaviour is not acceptable and your mother should be compensated.

First - this is a tricky issue. If an employer feels that an employee is having an excessive amount of time off, whether the illnesses are legitimate and covered by a medical note or not, the employer could decide to terminate the employee's contract. The fact that all these illnesses are covered by medical notes seems to make you feel the employer can do nothing about it - this is incorrect. There may come a time when the employer decides that your mother's ill health makes it unreasonable to continue to employ her on health grounds. It is vitally important that she is aware of this.
That said, it does seem inappropriate for a manager to be directly claiming that an employee is 'making up' an illness. She could initiate a grievance procedure relating to this, but to be honest, I do not see the point and what will be gained by doing so. What would be the nature of the grievance - i.e. what would be her stated goal -"I want my manager to stop saying I'm fabricating illnesses"?? Without witness testimony that the manager has made such claims it would be bound to fail. Even if it succeeds all she would get is "I'm sorry if you feel I have acted in this manner, it was not my intention, it will not happen again." It would be more appropriate to make an official complaint to a senior manager.
Her union may not have acted so far for these reasons - I would still strongly advise her to remain a member, because if you are insinuating that your mother may now have to have more time off ill she may fast be approaching the time at which disciplinary measures can and will be taken. It is at THIS point, when the company start to take formal action that she will be thankful she has union support.

A formal grievance is the first step. Many times the union can't step in to the situation until they are invited. If the Steward isn't helping (sorry to say, they're not ALL as active as they should be), a call to the office or the Business Agent will get the ball rolling. There are just some situations where the union can't help except for moral support; it all depends on the contract.

Your mom should consider accepting restricted duty if they offer it to her. It would help her get well and rested up.

Your mother needs to get some back bone first off.
Firstly she need to file a first step grievance in writing with he shop steward. If he/she fails to write it you go to the next level the local the BA or staff man. If your in good standing dues paid up then they have to file the grievance. Also she as a dues paying member she should have copy of the labor agreement.
As for the overactive thyroid she can take medication for that and it should be no problem as my wife as that. So get that grievance filed now.....

Your mother can start a formal grievance procedure against her employer. The company should have a policy on this, but if they don't, then there is a statutory procedure to go through. If she needs support with this, look at www.acas.gov.uk and get either the CAB or a f riend to help her if the Union won't help.

It sounds like she is a good worker who is going through some calamities. It's too bad this stuff happens to her, but the bottom line is the employer has to get value for their money, and if she can't do it, she can't do it.

Either way, this is not your battle and she should be ashamed for involving you in it.
