Your question is a good one.
Remember that Jesus' disciples were imperfect men, just like you and me. They endured some of the same things we all have to experience and they all got sick, grew old and eventually died.
Jesus' followers made mistakes, but he did not turn against them just because they made bad decisions.
Jesus in fact stated this regarding them---
"You are those who have stood by me in my trials. And I confer on you a kingdom, just as my Father conferred one on me"---Luke 22:28-29
Jesus chose the apostles to co-rule with him in his Father's heavenly government. Their human imperfections were not held against them.

Dan H hit it on the head. That's the stark contrast proving Jesus is who He said He was, and that He rose again. Every Disciple suffered death by beheading, stoning, or being crucified except John. John was pput in a vat of boiling oil, survived it, and was put on the island of Patmos. He ended up dying of old age, but was the only Apostle to do so. All the others could have easily avoided their deaths by saying it was all a lie, but they chose not to. This was no voluntary suicide like the Halle-Bop group, or tricked death like the Jonestown kool-aid. These men were horrendously murdered and could have escaped it. Wouldn't have happened for a lie. So, yes, they were loyal to the end. They failed before, because they were human, but they were forgiven and then carried on.

#1 They were with Jesus in the Garden at a very late hour. Even though Jesus explained to them he was soon going to die they were still sleepy
#2 who isn't afraid they will be captured and killed when the police ask who was with this man?
#3 Peter was warned..and although Peter was a forceful individual he was still a man...He loved Jesus but possible was afraid to be crucified.
#4 They could not fight the Roman army. And he had explained to Peter in the Garden and at the last supper..this is why he came in to the world...to die...They had to let him do it.

No, look what judas did. I don't think they all started out being loyal to him. Then there were those that turned against him, then there were those that denyed him, But I do think that all that did, had very deep regret, realising later how wrong they were. Ya, there wasn't one that would stand up for him, not one! They never believed he would be alive again in 3 days either.

They became really loyal after receiving the Holy Spirit
on Pentecost. They were so loyal most were willing to die a horrible death for Him
One can really see the difference in Peters behavior.
He was scared crap before receiving the Holy Spirit, then after he did, he was bold, making all sorts of speaches to the leaders of the Jews. Risking his life doing so.,
The Holy Spirit does change lives. Don't knock it unless you've tried it.

They were men like the rest of us
in bondage to sin and death.
On preparing his disciples for his death Jesus tells them, many things, that they failed to truly understand.
During Jesus' earthly ministry, he has taught them many things. How will they remember them all, especially since, even up to this moment, they fail to grasp so much.
He tells them that that was what he was sent to earth to do, "go his way to his Father."
Happily, Jesus promises: "The helper, the holy spirit, which the Father will send in my name, that one will teach you all things and bring back to your minds all the things I told you."
(@ Pentecost, 51 days later, the apostles and others have the holy spirit is poured out on them.)
Further, into the late nite, Jesus gives more admonition.
" I have many things yet to say to you," Jesus continues, "but you are not able to bear them @ present." Therefore Jesus promises that when he pours out the holy spirit, which is God's active force, it will guide them into an understanding of these things in accordance w/ their ability to grasp them.
Later, that same nite while in the garden of Gethsemane, the 1st time he found them sleeping he acknowledged the stress they have been under and the lateness of the hour, he says: "The spirit, of course, is eager, but the flesh is weak."
Then, he returns to prayer a 2nd time.
Do you discern that Jesus, did not chastise them, in any way; "at such a time...the hour has come...Look! the Son of man is betrayed...."
Nor punished, or thought less of or, loved less?
He stopped Peter when he grabbed a sword and cut off a man's ear. He wouldn't allow them to stop what he came to do.
After, his resurrection he gives even more instructions and comfort.
Before ascending to heaven.

They were human, like all of us, and subject to human failings. Jesus chose them most likely as a demonstration of how even though we are imperfect, he chooses us anyway. We all let him down daily, momentarily in fact, but he loves us still. That is the whole reason for his coming in the first place, to eradicate the punishment we deserved before we chose him. This is so simple and so beautiful I don't understand why so many people are haters.

Everyone, except John died for their faith! That's pretty darn loyal!
And no, John did not recant to save his life.
You see, you're talking about before the Resurrection, before the Holy Spirit came on them on Pentecost.
What a difference the Spirit makes!

Yes, all except Judas, Jesus recognised that his disciples where human, and to err is human, I beleive Peter was afraid but that they all loved Jesus with all their hearts, Thank God he looks upon the heart. Their flesh is what let Jesus down, yet he forgave anyway. Hope this helps.
