Timothy 2:15 states: "Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth."
Also in 1 Peter 3:15-17 states: "But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear: Having a good conscience; that, whereas they speak evil of you, as of evildoers, they may be ashamed that falsely accuse your good conversation in Christ. For it is better, if the will of God be so, that ye suffer for well doing, than for evil doing."
And finally in 2 Timothy 3:16-17 says: "All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works."

If we are not doing this, then how can we be effective in preaching, teaching and defending our faith?

I read the bible every other day, pretty much. King James, and I'm not even a Christian.

Good point. I try to study the Bible and related works everyday. I usually try so study for an hour per day. I normally use the King James, but I have some others for when I am really trying to get deep into a subject.

NLT easier to read
I study for 10 - 15 minutes almost daily. I'm a fairly new believer and honestly it's hard for me to sit and read anything for a lengthy period of time. I'm not trying to make reading the Bible a religious act but I do seem to spend a lot of time in prayer. I pray to grow in Christ and eventually I'll be able to pick up the Bible and read it for a time without actually putting my time spent with God on a timer sort of speak.

Yes I'm in the Word every day. I get up early to read and pray.

I like to read through the Bible in different translations. Right now, I'm reading the Amplified Bible. I just read the NIV. I like the New Living.

I am different when I am reading the Bible and praying. I need it and I can tell the difference in my focus, priorities and attitude toward people. If I don't pray in the morning, I usually don't pray all day - or even think about it.

I relinquish my day to Him first thing in the morning............. and then get a cup of coffee and wake up reading the Bible.

Yes... Holy Bible: notably the 7th Bible
http://www.godshew.org/Sevens5.htm
http://www.godshew.org/Bibles.htm

PST: there is NO Dis-approved in "approved"("only").
PST: there is NO respect of persons with God
(there is only respect of persons against God)
God has only one opinion of you all: approved.
You find that(only) by study of dis-approved vs approved;
which is notably a shew(plural of show) of law vs grace;
Which (law/grace) things are an "allegory" and a "mystery".
http://www.godshew.org/Allegory.htm

Holy Bible: does NOT think for you; DOES make you think.

NOTICE: 2Tim 2:15 does NOT say left/right dividing,
but says ONLY "rightly dividing" the word of truth: Grace.

It's preposterous order to teach & preach first, learn after.
Try learning first, and then you may teach & preach others.
Go ye & LEARN what meaneth Matthew 9:13(Hosea 6:6).

The GRACE(ONLY) of our Lord Jesus Christ with you all. Amen.

Not everyday, but, I have read it frequently.

Although I have the King James Version, I would much rather have a Catholic Bible.

In addition, I would really love to study the writings of the Early Church Fathers.

amen to that!
NKJV and AMP are good sources.
NIV..is junk, almost..water the spiritual meaning of theword of gOD..in critical places.
man was made a little lower than elohim..not angels.
is an honest mistake in KJV.
who/what is elohim? GOD.
man is made a little lower than GOD.
not lower than angels.
in them days.angels was highly revered as GOD.
and somewhere..it is written.peter or paul?
said we in Christ..will judge angels.
GO a bit farther..
how can a man..lower than angel cast out satan/demons?
unless he..man was made a little lower than GOD!!!
