I think both cases you propose are just lovely; I have only seen the first.
We had our bridesmaids wear the same dress, but it was a print - small little flowers of different colours in a watercolour kind of effect on a white embossed dress. The colours were pink, yellow, lilac, and light teal. What we came up with was for each couple to have one of those colours - for example, the "pink" bridesmaid had a wreath of pink flowers in her hair, and pink ribbons trailing from her bouquet. Her groomsman had a light grey tux, with a pink tie and cummerbund. It looked just amazing to see this pretty sea of happy colours!

I work as a bridal consultant, and this is a problem we come up against all the time. To answer your question simply, of course let them choose their own styles that work best with their particular body type! :) I would have the dresses all be the same length, floor length is best, if you go shorter though, have them a certain height from the floor (while wearing shoes.) Also, if you go shorter, I'd suggest having them wear the same shoe, at least during ceremony and photos, I even like bridesmaids to wear the same shoe if they're wearing a long dress. This will help them look like a "group" when they're standing together, and of course will look best in the posed photos. :) David's Bridal or any salon that carries the Alfred Angelo line are good choices, because both have probably the widest color selection in the widest range of sizes. Good luck!

I agree!
I think I might have watched the same show, on the style channel, they showed bridesmaids with different colors...and the dresses weren't exactly identical either. I think one was long, another dress was a bit shorter and so on. The dresses all resembled each other but they were not the exact same thing. I personally think that is very creative and it does look nice actually, I bet the bridesmaids would be happy also because not everyone looks good in the same color. Now to find myself a groom.......

Well, here's my take on this....I'm getting married on August 4th and our colors are a bunch of different purples. I am having 6 bridesmaids and I think 2 of them have the same color and style of dresses, and the other 4 are different as well. I just did a few different shades of purple for them. I know it will be different, but I think that's part of what will make my wedding unique.
I think that it doesn't matter what everybody else thinks about your choices. It's your special day and nobody really has the authority to make any decisions about it except for you and your fiance. Above all else, have fun with all the planning and don't sweat the small stuff. I really wish that's what I would have done. Good luck. :)

Great idea for the different shades of the same colour! I never thought about that but I think it would be really pretty! I have seen bride's maids wearing different colours, and the guys wore vests and ties to match the dresses. (MOH and best man wore blue, then there was also green and pink.) I don't think it would have the same affect with only two attendants on each side, but if you had at least three, it would look great!

When my mother was a young girl and a bridesmaid in a friend's wedding, all the bridesmaids wore different colors. My mother said that it was very pretty and everyone loved it.
I love the idea of having different shades of the same color for bridesmaid dresses.

As long as there's a reasonable coordination in both the dress styles and the colors/shading, I think it can be very pretty.
I must admit, I prefer something like this to absolutely identical bridesmaids.
In fact, I did something similar. I chose a skirt and a blouse pattern for my bridesmaids, provided them with the base fabric in the same shade of white as my gown, and told them to trim their outfits any way they liked. One did pink beading, another battenburg lace and little blue fabric roses, another a deep fall of lace, the fourth got a blue tartan fabric and did piping and bows in that, and the last left it very plain. They all looked wonderful and showed their distinct personalities while keeping a coordinated look.
So go for it! Nobody says bridesmaids have to look like they were stamped out with a cookie cutter.

I think as long as there's a theme to it or something tying the colors together, it's cool. If there was no continuity it would be too random. Your idea of the three pinks is different - I love it! Especially if they were the same dress in the different shades.

For our wedding the MOH will be in purple. The other bridesmaids will be in whatever shade of brown they want. Chocolate, mocha, whatever. All will have orange flowers with touches of white and a orangish pashima for unity.
I like it so much better when they are not all matchy matchy. It's more...natural. I wouldn't worry about lining them up in order from darkest to lightest. That would like like a gradient scale and would kinda defeat the purpose of letting them show thier personalities through their dresses.

I like the idea of different dresses in the same color but not the same dress in different colors. In photos it looks distracting when there are too many colors. When the girls are wearing the same color it draws more attention to the bride in the pictures and doesn't look as busy.
