How is the racism against whites in Atlanta, GA? I am considering moving there to become a police officer, but I do not want to be constantly "hated" because of being white, since the majority of Atlanta is African-American. I just hear rumours and would like some confirmation, before I decide on going there.

Thank you, Cansay.
Not sure why everyone here thinks "I" am the racist, I just dont want to move into an area that I will be disliked 24/7 because of my race.

You have a legitimate question. Majority-Black administrations around America have frequently (even consistently) demonstrated hostility to non-Blacks.
Be careful if you are planning to join the Atlanta PD: The police chief is Richard Pennington, a product of the Marion Barry era in Washington DC. He had to leave DC when a reform mayor was elected. He was hired as the New Orleans police chief by that city's mayor Marc Morial, another known cocaine addict and criminal.
A federal judge found that Richard Pennington committed widespread racial discrimination against White police in New Orleans. That didn't bother Morial..
Pennington had to leave New Orleans when Morial's term in office ended and the new mayor was elected on a reform ticket. The new mayor was Ray Nagin, and for Pennington to be unacceptable to "Chocolate City" Nagin is really saying something.
Pennington was hired as police chief for Atlanta anyway, which gives you an idea of how that city's administration feels about non-Blacks.

I moved from Houston to Atlanta just a year ago. I do not live in the city or the perimeter where I understand that racism does exist. I actually live just outside of Atlanta in Kennesaw. I do not experience racism here as much as I did in Houston. I believe it's more of a rumor. I found that the people here are much more friendly actually. I do go downtown quite a bit and really haven't experienced the racism. However I'm also in Aviation, not a police officer so therefore it definately may be different for you. If you do move, you will love it here!! It's so beautiful. Keep in mind I was born and raised in Houston and this is the first time I've ever been away from family. I've traveled extensively and this is the first time I ever felt like it was home. It's a personal choice, but for me and my two children. We love it!! I wish you the best!!!

There are black racist and yes you will have to deal with racism. Some african americans think whites are all the same and they blame whites for their problems, just as some whites think blacks are all the same, etc etc....and as a cop you will be dealing with people who are like that..because people like that are often criminals
...but I don't think the people you work with will be a problem. They have a good police department and they need good cops, and if you are good, they know they don't have the time nor the luxury of caring what you look like....cops are cops are cops...I think they are color blind when they look at each other (I hope I'm not being idealist but that's my experience).
You may see this in other public agencies...especially policially run agencies, and a lot of discrimination lawsuits have been won by whites over the years.
In Atlanta, you will run into all types of racist. However, I live in Atlanta and most people are lovely and don't care what color I am...which is what I really like about Atlanta...it's diverse enough that, in general, nobody thinks about what color the person standing beside them is. This is the city of Dr. King, and to me, he is the Saint of Atlanta, and I believe he watches over this city and brings something special to us.

You should know that if you ask a question concerning race it will draw criticism. I dont hear any problems from Atlanta cops about being profiled here because of race. If you dont want to live in an area that is predominately any other race than your own, then look outside the perimiter of Atlanta. There are good mixes of people all over the area. Find where you feel you will fit in best, and look there. I live 60 miles N. of town in Adairsville, and its a nice quiet Mayberry type town. There are lots like it around here, and they are all looking for good personnel. Check them out if you are concerned. Otherwise good luck and I hope it helps.

I think your best bet would be to come visit the area you would be working in and maybe try doing a ride a long or asking this to officers there so you can answer this question for yourself. "Atlanta, GA" covers a large amount of widely diverse socio-economic territory. Are you talking about downtown, Cabbagetown, Buckhead, Decatur, College Park, the area north of 285...the possibilities vary tremendously. There has been a lot of news coverage concerning the police and racism, but all of it has been from the perspective of the people and not the police. I would imagine that in DeKalb County, many people, not just any certain ethnic group, have a very healthy dislike of the police due to their apparent practice of shoot first and ask questions later.
I would imagine that most of us are not qualified to answer this question. As a normal citizen I have experianced very little reverse racism, and felt it more in other smaller southern cities I have lived. In fact, I have found than many areas I was orginally warned about by other people have presented absolutely no evidence of such feelings when I have been there. Normally as long as I am polite and cordial, so is everyone around me regardless of ethnicity.

Atlanta is a great city, but maybe you arent ready to make a move here. We have citizens that come in all colors. Its unfornuate that you think African Americans would attempt to single you out and make you feel miserable. What exactly do you think they will do to you. Deny you a job? Rob you? Deny you a loan to buy a home? I have been here 5 years and quite honestly I dont think the average African American is much concerned about you or me.
Whatever you put out is what you get back. Black,White,Red Or Yellow.
Oh BTW there is no such thing as reverse racism, in order for reverse racism to exist the minority group would have to be empowered to the point that they could exclude the majority from something. Thats not the case here in Atlanta or America. Its unfornuate that in 2007 this question has to be asked.
STAY WHERE YOUR ARE!

Hello
I live in Atlanta and can tell you from personal experience that it is not the safest city in Georgia to live in. To the answerer with ignorance (Mothra): Whites, black, Asians, have all experienced racism. What makes you think that one group is excluded? Your sarcastic "peachy cream" answer is bull s hit. You seem like quite a racist and I sure hope you don't reside in Georgia. You should go to some other state or another planet for that matter.

I know you are just asking because the media portrays Atlanta as the "Black Mecca" or something like that. As with any major city, there are areas that are majority Black, as well as Asian, Hispanic, and White, but there are plenty of areas that are mixed. I think you will be fine if racial problems is your only concern.
There are always going to be people who don't like you, not just because you are white, but because you are a cop, so you will just have to deal with that. If you are concerned with racial tension, you should get a job in one of the smaller municipalities that have criminials you are more comfortable with.

Funny thing about that. Most people will treat you at least as well or as badly as you treat them. Atlanta's no different.
