Ok, so we yawn when we are bord, tierd or if we see someone else yawn. BUT yawning HAS actually got a very good purpose. We (including animals) yawn because oxygen levels in our lungs are low. Studies have shown that during normal, at-rest breathing, we don’t use anywhere near our lung capacity; for the most part, we just use the air sacs at the bottom of the lungs. If the air sacs, called alveoli, don’t get fresh air, they partially collapse and the lungs stiffen a bit. As a result, it’s believed, our brain prompts the body to either sigh or take a yawn to get more air into the lungs. Certain aspects of yawning remain even more mysterious. Fetuses, for instances, have been observed yawning in the womb, yet it’s known that they don’t take oxygen in through their lungs. And yawning seems to be a symptom of multiple sclerosis and other medical conditions, for reasons unclear. Another puzzling phenomenon is that some male animals, men included, yawn in association with penile erection (although it’s presumptuous to assume they’re bored with their sex lives).

We yawn to get more oxygen into our system. When we yawn it is a sign that we are lacking oxygen. Also, when you see someone else yawn and you think that it is contagious, it actually isn't, you think because you saw the other person yawn you need some more oxygen in you just like them.

Hello,
(ANS) The real purpose of yawning is to release muscular tension within the diaphragm which is a large smooth muscle attached and in close proximity to the lungs. This helps the diaphram move more easily and allows improved air flow.
Yawning also releases our emotional state too.

Yawning helps the body take in more oxygen and is provoked when we are tired, sleepy etc. We either lie down and sleep or get up and do something to keep us active.
Some times yawning comes when we are exposed to some negative energies or bad vibrations.

I discussed this in one of my classes earlier. A teacher told me that it is the way of getting oxygen to enter the body. If you are wondering why people yawn when they are tired or bored, it is because when you are bored you begin to breath shallower without even noticing it. Therefore, there is a lack of oxygen. When you yawn, you breath in a lot more air than regularly, so basically it is the body's way of naturally bringing in more of the needed oxygen. I hope that this answer helped! :)

well i think it has to do with lack of oxygen to the brain and its the bodies natural defense mechanism to help release oxygen to your brain. I have severe indoor allergies to commercial buildings. When im at work once they depending on what season it is turn on their ac or heat my sinuses swell up and i feel really tired and start yawning all day long and i even feel lethargic. When the sinuses swell up the amount of oxygen decreases and therefore I yawn

its to do with the level of oxygen in your bloodstream - get up, move about , do some stretches - all will stop you yawning - as to the purpose, well, its one of your body's warning systems

I believe you yawn when your body needs more oxygen... It can be catchy, because usually if there is not enough oxygen for one person, than there is not for other people either....
