Why, surely every good Christian knows Matthew 24 by heart?

Matthew 24:34: "I tell you in solemn truth that the present generation will certainly not pass away without all these things (the rest of Matthew 24) having first taken place."
There are other references but this is my favorite. Feel free to mistranslate away to suit your needs.
The greek word in front of "generation" in the original Matthew translates as "this one visibly present here".

I guess he thought it was a neat way to keep them on their toes and looking over their shoulders for the rest of their lives.

You are our Atheist Bible Student (ABS) of the day because you read your Bible. Now let's clear the air. What you are referring to is Matt. ch 24:34 where Jesus tells his disciples that this generation shall in no wise pass away till all these things take place. Now you must remember that 1 day with God is AS a thousand years with man. When Jesus mentioned generation, he did not mean a single lifetime, but an entire dispensation. This is the dispensation of grace and it will not pass on to the next dispensation until all these things are fulfilled. Hope this helps a little.

Jesus spoke of the destruction of Jerusalem in judgment, which occured in 70 AD at the hands of the Romans.
Those Christians who were present at the time recognized the signs and left town, just as Jesus had earlier told them to.
What followed was the "end of the world" for the Jews.
The Romans experienced much the same turn of events about 400 years later.
Most theologians expect the definitive end of this world age to similarly occur, at some future time.

yet another obtainable explanation could have been that Jesus grow to be talking approximately non secular loss of life in Luke 9:27 and Matthew sixteen:28 - while He grow to be chatting along with his disciples. the single excluded from the dominion could probable have been Judas Iscariot. I purely have been on condition that concept after examining this verse: Hebrews 2:9 yet we see Jesus, who grow to be made slightly ° below the angels for the suffering of loss of life, crowned with glory and honour; that he by skill of the grace of God could style loss of life for each guy. yet i would not be too dogmatic approximately it. i think of that gray Tower and Cheese gave a greater constructive explanation.

First of all..God never 'messes around'. What he says is always the truth. The second coming is when the end of the world will take place(recited in the bible, the book of revelation). So believe. God will come to us a second time. Watch and be patient.

Jesus Christ never said his second coming. He said, that some of them would see him in his full Glory.
This is written in scripture, on the mountain, John and the others saw elijah and Moses along with Jesus in his full glory.
Now, John and the others wanted to build alters there and use them to worship all three men, but he was told not to do this. Moses and Elijah both testified that Jesus CHrist was king and Lord.
This story is called the transfiguration, and is fullfillment of the promise that they would see him in his glory before they tasted of death.

You need to quote your reference.
He did not say he was returning in their lifetime. He did say that he was sending a comforter and guide, the Holy Spirit.
I checked Matthew 24 - it does say that no one knows the day or hour of his return.
You need to be responsible with statements/questions... it matters.

Actually, if you cross reference the scriptures the 'generation of the fig tree' is what is being discussed -- which began around 1949 when Israel became a state.
