Yes, you are correct that Christianity has been used by rulers to keep peoples lives in check - hence the phrase: "Religion...is the opium of the people" (Karl Marx). That is not necessarily all bad, since every civilization needs a code of ethics in order to survive. And its not bad at all, if the code of ethics actually comes from the Creator of mankind (as Christianity claims).

Christianity gives people purpose in their lives. I don't understand how people can live without purpose. This is one of the things that drew me to Jesus Christ. I had pretty much figured out that if there was no God then there was no meaning to life. If there was no intelligence or meaning behind my existence, then I was just an accident - a random collision of molecules - that would soon cease to exist. I prayed and said "If there is a God, then show yourself to me and I will give my life to you." He did. I did.

The most important thing about Christianity isn't rules, but relationship. Its power is in a life-giving and life-transforming relationship with Jesus the Messiah (John 1:10-13) who makes a way for us to know the Father (John 14:6-7). We get to know God, be forgiven by Him, be changed by Him, and be with Him forever. That is what has made my life worth living and sacrificing for. By-the-way I'm also amazed that "Christianity has lasted this long." Look what He has to work with. Must be a God thing!

Christianity is a label and religion is a repeated regimen or ritual without faith or love. I'll agree that mere religion does seem to be something done in order to keep the masses in check. However, those who have a true relationship with God obey Him from the heart and are not being kept in check. They simply serve an everlasting and loving God because they can't help themselves. It's just like people who fall in love do almost anything to please the person they love. That said, I think Christian's should do our very best to take off the label and exhibit the true relationship we have with God. If we did that then people outside the faith wouldn't be so turned off by us but would long to have the same relationship with God that we have.

I'm sure lots of people have used Christianity to keep the masses in check. But the fact that people use Christianity for that purpose has nothing to do with whether or not Christianity is true. It's possible for Christianity to be true even if people use it to control the masses.

Honey, you need to investigate where Christianity came from and when it developed into what it is today. Yes, and absolutely yes. Organized religion was formed to control the masses to believe in religion so the greedy men who started it could get rich and have false power. Period. Perhaps you can add, 'to molest little boys' also. How did they do that? Created a God to fear. Fear is the best controlling tool.

When Karl Marx wrote, "Religion is the opiate of the masses." he was thinking specifically of Christianity. If you read the writings of Paul, he takes the theme of obedience to a single, all-powerful God and applies that to everything. "Slaves obey your masters; children obey you parents; wives obey your husbands" and Jesus' "Render unto Caesar that which is Caesar's." "Accept your lot in life, your reward is in Heaven."

The whole New Testament was designed to create a religion that would make people docile and subservient. Every hardship is a test from God to make you a better person. God moves in mysterious ways.

Why, the Bible even refers to Christians as sheep. To be herded to slaughter.

Religions generally do not exist to "keep the masses in check" -- they exist to foster warm fuzzy feelings and a sense of community. See:

There are many, many forms (denominations) of Christianity. They don't all do things the same way. Some are entirely Bible-based, others just do a couple of readings (especially the Gospel) on Sundays.

Some Christians go to church faithfully, and some go only occasionally...or not at all. All one needs to be a Christian is to believe in Jesus...and believe that He is our Savior.

First of all, religion is a personal choice, and it has no chains on a person. If you have bad feelings about it, just walk away. No one can force you to believe the teachings, or follow the ideals of any religion.

Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its lusts, and do not go on presenting the members of your body to sin as instruments of unrighteousness; but present yourselves to God as those alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God.

For sin shall not be master over you, for you are not under law but under grace.
