and before anyone goes ballistic on me, I'm not talking about having friends with benefits and cheating or anything like that.

Does it mean that even if your spouse is a total psycho you have to do whatever he or she says and not listen to outsiders for advice?

To forsake all others is simple in my eyes. When a man and woman join together they become one. Now, if you understand that you are now as one than you don't allow anyone in to cause division. No one is more important than the person that you are now joined with because this person is now apart of you. Often we think of affairs when we here the words "forsake all others" but it's deeper than that. Forsake anyone and everyone that will cause trouble in your marriage even your parents, friends, coworkers, or who ever. Forsake means to leave or separate yourself from. If you want your marriage to work than this statement will never be unreasonable. If I'm always finding fought in your spouse and pointing out these things to you or others you should apply this rule. Leave, forsake our friendship because my actions will cause problems in your marriage. OK, when talking to someone about your marriage it should ALWAYS be someone that has the best interest of the marriage and it should be someone that you both trust and respect. Look for someone with wisdom and understand what marriage is and what it takes to make it work. NEVER seek advice from friends, family or co-workers.

Forsaking all others means having intimate relations with only your spouse. I'm not sure what you're really asking... How far could that statement be taken? It only has one clear meaning. You can't take it anywhere...

The way it's supposed to go is:

God
Spouse
Family
Friends
Strangers

At least that's if you subscribe to most organized religions. If you marry a psycho then that's definately a problem and you can get legally divorced. However according to the bible you aren't supposed to date or marry anyone else...ever (unless they die). Hence why marriage is such a huge commitment.

To me, forsaking all others not only talks about fidelty but also means to put your spouse first. You married that person and they are now your closest kin, and your best friend. For example, if your spouse is arguing with your best friend, you pick your spouse because he/she is who you will spend the rest of your life with. Thats just a personal perspective though.

No, it doesn't mean that you have to put up with a psycho, or even stop getting advice from your girlfriends.

The vow really does speak to the whole cheating thing. It doesn't mean ignore everyone else in your life, it means you're done with your exes, and that you're going to put your spouse's needs above anyone else's.

No, it does not mean get rid of your family. But if the family becomes a matter of contention, for relationship s sake - then it means to moderate that adverse effect on your relationship. It should never come down to a choice of "family or your mate". Neither of you should create that kind of stress.

But the moment that one of you feels that they are "married to the family" and not each other - then it is time to re-evaluate your priorities.

It means your spouse comes before your family or friends. It means your marriage comes before anyone else.If your husband has to move to make a decent living then you move with him.If your a guy you don't have "girl friends" you hang out with (girls don't hang out with guy friends either) it puts a strain on trust and on the marriage and it is playing with fire that usually burns the marriage up in the end.

It just means that the spouse always comes first. It's about fidelity.
Psycho is a whole different kettle of fish...
