Lys, you find the Declaration of Independence stupid? I sure hope you aren't an American.

josie and queen of yack, I tear up every time it's read. The fact that they were willing to pledge their lives, their fortunes and their honor to one another in the name of freedom gets me every time. Thank you to all who answered. May we all consider the meaning of these words today.

Dearest Kallan!

Thank you for sharing that! I am an Australian as you know and i have often heard of this Declaration of Independence....but never actually heard or read it before.

As Americans you all ought to be so proud of such a beautiful piece of work! I only wish we Australians had such a document.

We as you may know still remain under the arm of the British.
Their flag sits in the corner of ours like a stain on our shirts.
When our flag should bear the emblem of our countries right full owners, the Aboriginals.

Britain stole this country from them and tried in vain to steal their very existence as they tried to do to your fine country.

I hope one day we get to have our own Independence day....
I wish you and your fellow country men a wonderful day from Down Under!
Blessings!

A fair presentation of the declaration in its final (and rather dilluted) form. Jefferson was more than a bit of a radical and this declaration, like his original version of the constitution were "tamed" by his fellow congressional delegates.

I would wish that the government of this nation would live up to the promise of these ideals for all of its citizens, something which it has historically never done. We must honestly look to and assess the history of this nation recalling the treatment of native Americans, the issue of slavery, womens rights, United States colonization and expansionism, the internment of citizens of both Japanese and German heritage druing World War II, as well as current civil rights issues, to name but a few issues that we must face. We must also questions whether all persons are truly seen and treated as equal in the eyes of the law. We must decide whether we simply want to be a slogan shouting propaganda machine to the rest of the world or a representative of what mght be possible to all others.

Perhaps one day this nation might live up to its ideals and its promise of justice and democracy, freedom and liberty, personal rights and a system of just laws or, has Jefferson calls for, a new government might be established, replacing the current government which is not abiding by its own laws nor well serving its citizens.

Happy Fourth of July.

Happy Independence day to you!

About 10 years ago I visted washington DC and saw the actual display....tears came to my eyes. I'm not an overly sentimental person, but that document was one of the biggest gifts to humanity.

Thanks

Thank you. A wonderful Indpendence Day to you and yours. I have had the great pleasure many times over the years viewing that document with my own eyes. The National Archives is one place I visit every time I go to D.C.

Thank you Kallan!

It reminds me of the importance of my own personal efforts to live tolerance, and expand myself into freedom in all it's forms.

Freedom demands self responsibility, and must be considered daily, not taken for granted - or else, where is the freedom?

Happy freedom day !!!!!

Happy Independence day to all good Americans.

The people's government, made for the people, made by the people, and
answerable to the people.

God grants liberty only to those who love it, and are always ready to guard
it and defend it.

Thank you so much for this reminder of what our founding fathers fought for.
For us who were born in the US, and for us who have fought hard to become a citizen of this great country...and for all of those that are not citizens but are working hard for this country...

Happy Birthday, and let us not forget these gifts that were passed on to US!!!
