I was a Christian most of my life. I didn't find "freedom." I found Christians to be the most bigotted, self-centered, self-righteous, uneducated people in the world and realized that I could have no part of a faith that encourages that.

Modern Christianity is a farce. You have those who believe God is an ATM machine - as long as they believe in Jesus, they will get that Mercedes. That is such a sick faith. You have those who believe they are better than anyone else because they are "saved." You have those who believe that Christianity is the only "way to salvation."

The sad thing, most of the people in your churches are not educated about the Bible or about their faith. Christians in America even go so far as to say that either 9/11 was God's punishment on our nation or that 9/11 was caused by Satan.

Regardless, I came to the realization that Christians are not the people of faith they think they are nor do they know what they believe. Most Christians don't study the Bible, don't know about other faiths and what they believe, and don't focus on anyone outside of the Christian circle they create.

Sorry for the rant - but I am just feeling a bit angry today about how the Christians here on yahoo have been treating others.

How do you know that ALL athiests were once christians? That opinion is more than a little presumptuous, don't you think?

Who the hell are you to tell anyone else what to believe? Are you some sort of genius? Did god die and leave you in charge?

We live in a free country where, whether you like it or agree with it or not, we are all free to believe as we will. Personally, I believe christianity is a destructive philosophy which harbors a deep-seated and sick hatred of women and attracts lazy, stupid, cowardly hypocrites. It just doesn't work for me but if others find peace of mind and happiness within it, well good for them. I'm not going to question it because I'm not the spiritual police and I don't want to be. To each his own. However, I will not lie and say that something is good when I do not believe that to be so and I will not say that I believe something that I vehemently do not just to make others happy.

Finding freedom from Christianity isn't about defying God.... gods don't exist to be defied. The freedom is found in acknowledging that gods don't exist and that one needn't concern oneself with such mythology.

If I ever do want to be part of any kind of organized religion, Buddhism is probably one of the first I'd look into, but as of right now, I most identify with Secular Humanism. I'm a "Bright" (look that up to see what I'm talking about). I have a naturalistic world view.

So, you're saying we should have at least some sort of standing, even it's Buddhism? Why is that? Now, granted, I've considered Buddhism as a spiritual choice but I don't look at it as a religion. I look at it as a philosophy.

I am assuming you're Christian. Why would you even make a suggestion like that? Are you not supposed to show me the pathway to your god? To your beliefs? To your religion?

I do have beliefs and they revolve around the premise that god doesn't exist. I just don't need to label that a 'religion'.

Who says they don't? Perhaps they do but don't have a need to preach about it like others. Perhaps when they say 'there is no God' they are saying there is no God as the Christians believe in and shove down their throats! Who says organized religion is a good thing? I thought the Living Presence was what religion is supposed to be about and that certainly doesn't need to be organized. Relationship between the Living Presence and one's self is personal.

I do meditate...but religion isn't necessary for my survival.

It always amuses me when people say that any religion is better than no religion. Why? Because faith is good? I did fine as an atheist child, in fact, I fought less with my parents when compared to the Christian children around me. I'm not saying that my lack of religion made me do it...but I got along fine without religion for...my entire life. Why do I need it now all of a sudden? Because I can't find a reason to be happy? Because there is no hope in my mind?

When I was a bit younger, actually, a Christian asked me the same thing. They asked me to pick a religion, any religion, because faith in something was better than nothing. I picked the Egyptian religion, long dead to society, and the Christian was furious that I hadn't picked Christianity.

I don't need it. It's a waste of space for me. Besides, every other religion in the world wants me dead in some sort of way, regardless of faith or no faith. "I believe in God!" "Allah will smite you!" "I believe in Allah!" "God will send you to hell!" "I believe in nothing!" "...Why not?"

Why not? Because everyone wants to kill each other over something as mundane as which God is right! It's a horrible thing to want someone to be, to order them to pick a side so someone can start oppressing them.

I do not have a religion because I have studied all of the major ones and found them to be crocks, plus what I have learnt in my science, philosophy, and theology classes provide pretty strong evidence.

I do not believe in Rube Goldberg-ish philosophies, be they Christianity, Buddhism, or anything else. The simple TRUTH is the best, and that is atheism.

I've learned about most religions, as soon as I learned something I dont agree on (ie I'm going to hell if I dont believe like them), I moved on to the next, sadly most say the same thing. buddhism was the one I most related with but MY way of thinking is what works for me. I have taken the good from them all and call it my own religion.

That is a rather inane argument.

How about this: "If you don't want to blow your head of with a shotgun, at least try slitting your wrists."?

There is no difference in these arguments except you perceive religion to be a good thing.
