My cat Sam is a completely different cat now that she's had her first litter of kittens. (about 5 weeks ago) She hasnt gone to the bathroom the same since, but about a week ago she would purposely pee in her litter box and then step outside and poop. We just moved into a new apartment and it is wreaking havoc on out carpet. We thought maybe she just wanted more attention or something, we tried spending more time with her and petting her, she just seems completely pissed off and doesnt even want to be around us. Were at the point where we dont know what to do with her... She isnt a good companion anymore and if she's not happy here what are we supposed to do? I'm just so confused. If anyone has any answers that might pertain to the bathroom problems, PLEASE RESPOND! I need to know if it's medical or if she's doing it for other reasons.

Cats are very territorial and also the average cat is a very good mother. Take her situation of just giving birth and becoming a new mom and also being moved at the same time. You think you are confused, imagine how she is feeling. She doesn't understand what moving is all about. All she knows is that she is not in her home and she now has little fur balls hanging around her. Life at her end really has changed and there is nothing she can do to understand it. First of all I would take her to the vets to make sure there is nothing medically wrong with her. No sense making the situation fester any more if there is something wrong. If everything there is okay I am sure the vet will have some suggestions for you. Hopefully Mom & her babies have their own quiet little space maybe inside of a closet or something. Cats are very clean animals and they don't generally eliminate outside the litter box unless there is something wrong. I wonder if she is really straining to poop and it just happens outside the box. Yelling at her isn't going to help anything so you might as well save your breath. I am sure your little Sam girl will be back - you just need to have patience while trying to discover what the problem is. Maybe it's just a matter of the location of the litter box.

When my cat had her first litter she got very depressed and was acting very strange so i took her to the vet and they said cats can suffer from depression after having a litter it can be traumatic for them and she also had mastitus so they gave her antibiotics and she changed back to her old self! Cats can be a ***** when it comes to the litter box mine is the same and i have 5 cats and they all do the same! try getting 2 litter boxes this may help! its like they get lazy and just go where ever it suits!

It's possible it's medical..only your vet can rule out any health issues she may have as a result of the birth process. Hormones after pregnancy are not what they were and can make your cat act strange for a while. This should resolve after the kittens are weaned. What you'd see is a gradual return to her old self. Meanwhile, it's best to just humor her and let her be.

I don't see anything in your question about your ever having taken her to the vet.

That is the place to start whenever an animal's behavior changes. People often attribute such changes to behavior issues when it turns out they are medical problems.
