I'm 24 and have sucked my thumb since I was about 4. From what I can tell there is conflicting opinions over whether this is ok, or whether it is indicative of some form of psycological condidtion. I'm not about to go out and kill any body- I just want to know if there is something wrong with me!

There's nothing wrong with sucking your thumb. There's nothing wrong with picking your nose. There's nothing wrong with twisting and pulling your hair out.
All are habits which you may or may not have, there's nothing at all wrong with these habits its just some people are funny and make horrible comments, but don't let those people scour the views of everyone else.

I don't see it as bad or wrong, and if you was my partner, I'd think it was cute, but if you feel you're more aware you are doing it than others, and you feel its wrong then seek some advice to stop the habit.

Feel free to do what you like, its your life.

For a complete web site on this subject, go to www.thumbsuckingadults.com .

Except for its misconstrued social definitions and possible occlusive affects, there's nothing wrong with thumb sucking. Considering its advantages: free, legal, without calories or drugs, instantly calming, helps in obtaining a deeper sleep, has been proved to simulate the physical and mental benefits of meditation, it's convenient, quiet and non-intrusive and more, I'd say you're lucky if it's your habit...at any age.

It's a habit, and probably an unconscious reaction to stress. It's equivalent to smoking cigarettes or the mandatory triple-espresso every morning. Unlike the triple-espresso, it is NOT regarded as cool and grown-up. Like the smoking cigarettes, it IS regarded as a personal weakness.

Employers WILL regard you as immature and perhaps unreliable. Most potential mates WILL see you as a cute date, not a lifelong partner. At 24, you may not have yet experienced enough frustration at being misperceived to quit your thumb sucking. By 34, you may be tearing your hair out over it.

Try to quit.

First of all it is extremly un-healthy. When you were a kid your parents should have tried to stop you because it is an additcion. Basically it can really hurt your body and your teeth. You should see a sycoligist to try to get to the bottom of your problem before you can really hurt yourself. Good luck and STOP SUCKING YOUR THUMB

I think it's about time you do something about it. If you can't manage to stop by yourself that's enough reason to talk to your doctor about it.
