I know that female hamsters give off a distinctive smell when they are on heat which is every 5 days or so. But if you have a male hamster and he is looking unwell, tired, not eating etc I would get him checked over by a vet.

Healthy males don't have an odor. Healthy females do have a musky odor when they're in season (which is about every 4 days) and give off a waxy substance that can be hard to wash off.As females age, the waxy substance pretty goes away. The musky smell remains but it's not so strong. (And never, ever wash a hamster because they can get sick easily from that.)

It could be something like some rancid food stuck in the hamster's cheek pouch, and that can lead to a serious infection. (If the smell is coming form the hamster's 'head-end', that's a a sign that this is the problem.) In that case, have the vet swab the cheek pouches to remove any debris that's stuck there.

In any case, don't mask a bad smell - a checkup at the vet's is always your best bet.

Like another mentioned...does your hamster have wet tail maybe? It has a very distinctive smell.
Is your hammy a boy? They tend to give off a somewhat musky smell when they are "mature".
There are small animal deoderisers you can get from your local pet supply store that can help. Boys hamsters will pee on EVERYTHING in the cage so be sure you are changing the bedding regularly and cleaning the accessories as well.
What kind of bedding you are you using? Carefresh works very well at odor control. My hedgehog is a little stinker and after I switched to carefresh I noticed the smell got a LOT better.

. The smell is either on the outside or coming from inside so be a detective. Last resort the call to the vete may have urine on him to give him the odor. Don't use the cedar or pine shavings. Switch to carefresh. Its better for them and you only have to remove the part that was used. It doesn't stay wet like the shavings. Give your little guy a sponge bath and see if that helps Check the cage out good. Are you feeding him other than hamster food. stick to that. Also ask at the pet store you bought. Do you see him grooming himself. Just stick to hamster food for awhile

First, wash your hamster gently with a tear free baby shampoo (gentler on the skin and eyes) and make sure to get him thoroughly clean. Then make sure you change and wash out his cage. Even if you change the litter, it could still be lurking on the cage itself and using a bit of bleach usually kills anything that could be there. Rinse the bleach off so it doesn't hurt your critter.

Double check your hamster's diet. Rodents do have farts just like humans and it could be related to something he has eaten. Or it could be in his "end product" within the litter.

Do you have a female rodent that is nearby and he's trying to mate with her? Like male cats, this could also be part of the problem.

Good luck.

Maybe it has wet tail or your feeding it some thing that doesn't agree with its stomach and its having diarrhea. Have a vet check it out.
