Skin So Soft by Avon. That's the only thing my parents and grandparents.
It was safe for the skin and it smells good too!
I included a link to one of the products, but they changed the bottle since I was little, so I can't figure out which one was the exact one, but I think this might be the one.
Here's the description of it:
Bugs go away! Bug Guard protects against mosquitoes, deer ticks, black flies, gnats, no-seeums and biting midges. This nongreasy formula helps replenish moisture, leaving skin soft & smooth. Waterproof formula DOES NOT need to be washed off after use. Dermatologist tested. Hypo-allergenic. DEET-free; PABA-free. Suitable for the entire family. In Gentle Breeze fragrance. 4 fl. oz.

Lavendar essential oil. It smells nice and repels most insects. You can get it at most health food stores. An ounce here costs about $4 and lasts ALL year as it only takes a few drops.

Use Avon's "Skin-So-Soft" spray bath oil. It is a great insect repellent and so safe you can use it on a newborn baby. It works great. I don't know if it the oil or the scent. And the scent is really nice. Try it.

This product came recommended by my daughter's allergist. She has extremely sensitive skin on top of having a lot of environmental allergies. Natrapel doesn't make her skin irritated and it keeps the bugs away. I love it and have only used it for 3+ years now. It is easy to apply and doesn't smell so bad. There are a lot of different products (wipes, spray, lotion, bands, etc.) so I like the variety. It may be hard to find, so use the websites to help you. My daughter's biggest allergy is to mosquito bites and this product works well defending that.

tea tree oil is best, buy the essential oil and put a couple of drops in a spray bottle half filled with water. Does a brilliant job
