Take it to the boss and if it is not dealt with discreetly or at all keep going up that ladder. I had the same problem with a worker of mine and we worked in a childrens shelter. I spoke to him about it (as we were friends) but he just continued. I had to go through 3 superiors before he and the bosses were relieved of their duties sighting unsafe conditions and bad work ethic. Good luck.

I have had to fire people for this. But since I am no longer in the position to fire people I goto a differet area than my own and call my supervisor. He then is supposed to come to the area and talk with the person and decide if it is indicated to do a blood alcohol area. Unfortunately the last 2 times I did this in relationship with one coworker he came to the area to late to do anything about it, several hours later. My guess is that since we work short staffed anyway, suspending or terminating an employee would just make matters worse. The biggest problem with this I see is that I am a nurse and this could make a big difference in a patients life.

If you decide you must act, or tell, be sure you have proof positive. You can be sued, and/or lose your job, if you can't prove it.
Meanwhile, if you must do something, put a card for AA in an envelope so it can't be read through the envelope, and find a private way to give it to the person, so they do not know it was you, and no one else can see you do it, or get to the envelope. That way the person knows someone is on to them, and you can't get in trouble as easily. And, your conscience is clear about them drinking and driving.

If it is once in a long while, then you have the option to ignore it. But is it a habitual thing, and there is a clear danger that work or safety will be affected, you need to tell the person that it is not acceptable. Be careful it does not backfire on you. Put someone in a corner and they might just turn on you.

I worked with an RN who drank in her car to and from work and trembled during the 12 hour shift when the alcohol wore off. Scary huh? I didn't tell because the supervisor would notice soon enough...

i have worked with two people with this problem. both times i talked it through with them.in my job we look after others so it was really important that they stopped drinking at work for this reason. i told them that i would be there for them to talk to,and offered to find some councillors for them to see,but made it clear that i wouldn't just pretend i didn't know. i think that if you ignore it,you may as well be doing the drinking yourself. be honest and open,give them a chance but tell them that if you see/smell it on them again you'll have to report it. it's\ not easy but you need to be responsible if they can't be. good luck!!!!

It should be reported, even if is done anonymously. The person probably also drives to and from work...think of that. Maybe they are very stressed about something, and it is a cry for help. You could be doing them a favour.

Most likely this co worker has a drinking problem..I
would confront the person. Let her/him know that this makes you uncomfortable, and it's not appropreate @ work.. If then the person didn't stop I would go to my supervisor, and tell him/her the situation at hand.. Refer your co worker to go to www.alcoholicsanonymous.com. for help if they want it .

Had this happen to me. He was dancing around trying to keep coffee in his cup. Some one seeing this called me (he was my manager) you've got to do something - I said "I'm not his mother".
He did receive help (upper management finally clued in). We have been friends over 20 years and I am across Canada.
Shite happens - its called LIFE.

you should mention that you can smell the booze to him first and then if he doesnt smarten up then get the boss involved, could it be that he is a better worker after a few cocktails?
