My sorority sister told me that there is a good job available at her workplace. The glitch is that I don’t have a car and there is no public transportation to get there. So, I need to find out how far it is and see if it is possible to walk there. Rarely, I’ll be able to get a ride with my friend, but it will be hard as we might have different schedule.

She isn’t sure how fast she drives, so I just ask about her driving style. She has a 1992 Toyota Celica with a 2.2-liter, 135 hp, I4 engine and a 5-speed manual transmission. She mentioned that she usually keeps it in 4th gear and if she needs to pass another car, she would change to 3rd gear. The route is mostly a straightaway, on a side road and she would drive at a constant speed for 30 minutes.

1. Roughly, how far is it?

2. Is walking realistic?

3. Roughly, how fast does she drives?

It is possible to walk the distance for a good workout, but not very practical to walk it daily or weekly for work! At 4th gear, the Celica will be traveling between 35-45 MPH, averaging 40 MPH, which translates to approximately 15-20 miles distance during the 30 minute drive including stop and go situations. If you need the job, you should consider getting a bicycle, and if you are a good cycler traveling at 15 MPH, you will take approximately 60-75 minute to get to your destination. You definitely should not walk that distance just to get to work, because you will be tired by the time you reach work, and how will you get back home, when you will be all tired after work!!!

You certainly put in a lot of effort. I can think of some easier ways to find out how far it is.

1. Look at a map.
2. Go to any mapping site (mapquest, etc.) and enter the two addresses.
3. Go on a dry run with your friend and check the mileage.

you need to know her speed to calculate distance, but 30 mins in 4th gear sounds like a long way to walk.

Geez, can you be any more clueless? If you're in a sorority, you must be in college. Put that education to good use and figure it out.
