Reception conditions vary from one location to another. Start by going outside and looking at the rooftops. If the TV aerials are short it's a strong signal area. If they are long you're in a bad reception area and will definitely need an outside aerial. A signal booster needs a signal to boost, so if you are using an indoor aerial in a poor signal area the booster won't have any effect. If you want to go digital, there's another consideration:

With analogue TV as the signal weakens the picture gradually gets snowier until no longer watchable. With digital there is a sudden point at which the signal is too weak to be usable. This is called the edge of the cliff effect. Even with a good outdoor aerial you may not get all Freeview channels because until the analogue is switched off, some freeview channel groups are being transmitted out- of -band and need a wideband aerial to receive them. Also digital is not on full power yet until analogue is switched off. Here is a link to help you.

You really need an external antenna, provided you live close enough to local channels broadcasting Free-to-air programming.
