What did Jesus mean when he said this?

Interestingly, gospel accounts tell of the different excuses people gave to Christ for not immediately becoming his follower. This man is one.

Luke 9:59, 60 gives the account of a man to whom Christ extended the invitation to be his follower. The man begged off by saying that he needed to bury his father first. His father was not yet dead. Had he been, the man would not have been there in the first place listening to Jesus. What the man was saying was let me tend to my parents until their death and then, having taken care of those responsibilities, I will be your disciple. This man is not prepared to put the Kingdom of God first in his life. Compare Matthew 6:33.

Jesus responded with the above words which meant let the dead bury the dead. That is, let the spiritually dead bury the physically dead. (It is bad to be physically dead; but far worse to be spiritually dead. For if one is spiritually alive, one can receive a resurrection from physical death. But the spiritually dead, if they remain that way, will suffer death that is eternal.)

As I recall, one fellow was wanting to follow Jesus, but first wanted to bury his father. Jesus said let the dead bury the dead. Obviously worldly things were more important to the man than spiritual things (following Jesus).

Christ talkes in parables, which is why everyone gets so confused, but it means that those who are spiritually deal (unbelieving/not living according to the gospel) would have to bury the physically dead(not living) people.
basically when people dont follow the teachings of the church there are wars and alot of people die. sad stuff.

Spiritually speaking, the men involved there in that event were actually natural men. It is because the natural men will be born yet in the spirit becoming angel-like in the soon coming KIngdom of Heaven under the rulership of THE LORD GOD-THE LORD JESUS CHRIST starting the year 3500. Other men like the Prophets and Saints and their disciples called the chosen ones among natural men are already today given the spirit of godship as gods thus, life of eternity is already with them. But not yet today, for the natural men as dead yet thus, THE LORD JESUS said for them let the dead bury the dead. THANKS GOD; FEAR GOD; PRAISE GOD; GLORIFY GOD; HONOR GOD; LOVE GOD AND WORSHIP GOD. Christ means let the spiritually dead bury the physically dead. The spiritually dead are the truly dead. The physically dead are just physically dead. Christ's emphasis is on the spiritually dead. Spiritually dead are those folks unawakened, unaware of Christ's and their own reality.

The bible, even one passage, cannot be explained in a sentence or two. It's much too complex and much too important to take lighty. That's why it's important to study the bible, not just read it. The link below will give you a full explanation of the meaning behind this bible passage.

read 2nd chaper of the bhagava-gita! (shankya-yoga)

it means that the ones, who are spiritually dead may take care of their bodies, whether these bodies are alive or not.
on the other side, the ones who have found eternal life ( meaning self realization), are not touched by matters of the gross material body.
the soul is said to be transcendental, cannot be torn to pieces, drown in water or dried by wind, etc.....
see also the "shankya-philosophy" generally in the vedas!
