Do NOT buy cologne...guys always say "thanks", but in reality they want to either buy their own cologne or get it from their girlfriend (because it's what "she" likes). Plus, he'd be terrified to wear it and have to explain who gave it to him, yet feel guilty if he didn't use it when you were around.
The fact that you remembered his birthday will be more important than how much you spend, and the more you spend, the more "interested in him" you might appear. Keep is simple: if you just want to recognize his birthday, get a card; if you want to get a gift, get a card "and" a CD or DVD (an action flick, no drama).

OK, I'm not a teenage boy but I think model cars and or remote control cars, planes, etc. would make nice gifts. There's always cds. Or giftcards if you don't know what music they like. And sometimes tools can be nice for teenage BOYS. Does he have a car? Maybe a nice key chain or mirror ornament. And also maybe sketch pads/canvas' and nice art supplies.

cologne might just tell him he stinks. stick with general intrest stuff like gift certificates or movie coupons....
one thing all teens love is to be able to make their own decisions...

cologne is too cliche...you know what your friend likes...even if its his favourite dish...he'll like it...otherwise he's an asshole
