We know that there are gay Koreans among us. However, they are not as open as they are in many other countries. Public displays of any kind of affection - straight or gay is frowned upon. It is just the way it is in our society. The Koreans that you talked with were either very naive or embarrassed to admit their existence. A very large part of our culture is "saving or losing face." If a Korean were to admit that there are gay Koreans then they would lose face. A denial is their way of saving face. Homophobia does not seem to enter into the equation. Often times you will see men in mixed clubs dancing together. Not slow dancing but usually in a group. And I'm sure you have seen many Korean women walking together and holding hands. Those things are all a part of our culture. We know there are gay clubs in Itaewon but most of us, if asked, would say "I don't know, its not my business."

Eun L gave the best answer I have ever heard regarding this question. I have a gay Korean (male) friend and he agreed completely as well.
It is very similar to the 1950's in the U.S., when Studio Executives went to great lengths to "cover" for the likes of Rock Hudson. (he even got married) And the US had similar mores regarding public display of affection of ANYONE back then as well.It is the nature of political culture that nations grow more liberal with time. (the exception being a dictatorship)
And KOrea is on the fast track. It is just a matter of time.

Actually Most Korean gays hide what they are a gay.
That's why most Korean scare them especially men dislike them.
So we can't discover gays usually. Because of that, Some people believe there isn't any gay in Korea. But I can surely say there are a bit of gays and lesbian in Korean .
they've just pretended they aren't gay.

i live in south korea and you're right, there is a strong denial of the existence of gays among koreans but it doesn't necessarily mean there's absolutely no gay here. take harry soo for example. he's a transvestite pop star here and he had just announced his engagement to his boyfriend on national television! but he's just lucky that he's accepted by the general public. other gays aren't that lucky though, most would probably be disowned by their families if they are found out.

Yes, maybe they are scared of gays because it goes against traditional thinking where you get married and have children.
But there is an openaly gay Korean actor and a famous
transexual (post Op) actor/ singer Ha re Su.

I was wondering the same thing myself. Apparently, I asked some of my Korean friends about it and a few admitted that there are. Although this is considered a taboo in their country. One famous male celebrity revealed to be gay on National TV. Everyone thought it was a brave thing to do. But eventually, he was criticized and mocked. He quit the business and was never heard of anymore. Koreans are known to be conservative and they want to continually tell the whole world that.

I also claimed there were not much homosexualities in korea when someone asked me before.
the reason I said that is becuz I really haven't seen some people who is homosexual in korea.
it's not that there were no homosexuality in korea..
but.. even tho they are, they dont'r really accept the fact that they are homosexual or they dont tell the other people that they are gay. it's like we are not as open as the other countries.
If someone say that he or she is gay, they are gonna be seperated or excluded from the other people.
They think that it's so werid to have some homosexual people around.
we just dont know if they are gay or not... so it seems like there is no homosexuality in korea and we say the truth.. cuz that's what we've seen.

Well, actually....I think Eun L gave a pretty lame answer. I dunno exactly, but is he Korean man? And what has Sami been smoking? I want some!
Homosexuality remains generally low among Koreans, primarily due to the strong Confucian traditions of most Koreans regardless of their official religious affiliation.
Also, sexual relations between members of the same sex is regarded as "sexual harassment" (Article 92 of the Military Penal Code) and therefore lawfully punishable by a maximum of one year servitude.
And now,..... to answer your "QUESTION!!!!" why Koreans believe there are no gay Koreans, is because they're all a bunch of liars. Sometimes people lie so often, they start to believe their own lies!!!!
