No matter what home remedy you try, you MUST MUST pick all the nits off of each strand of hair, the live lice are fairly easy to kill, home remedys include lathering the head with mayonasie, or vaseline(very hard to remove) , hair styling gel, tee tree oil, etc etc...and though these remedies may kill the bug itself. ( thru suffication) the eggs are what you need to get control off and the only way to safely insure the eggs dont hatch out, is to remove each and every one of them. The eggs are incased in a very hard substance that will resist most home remedies...even a hair dryer will often kill the louse itself, but the eggs are a totally different story. You must go thru all strands of hair and remove the eggs, most of the eggs will be found close to the scalp, within a quarter of a inch of the scalp. You can remove them with your fingers..and drop them into a cup of water..for they will float...the darker the eggs the closer they were to hatching out. Dropping them in the water gives you and idea of how many you have on the hair and what life cycle they are in. You can purchase lice combs, and also dog flea combs will also work to help get the live lice and the eggs of the strands of hair. All beddings, and hats and clothes that have come in contact with the infected person should be washed, bleached if possible and put thru hot cycle of dryer. Some items cannot be washed and you can place those items into a plastic bag, seal it off and leave it in the bags for at least two weeks. If their are eggs on the items, they will hatch out within ten days and without a food source will die...however to be on the safer side I would leave them in the bag a few days longer. (example stuffed animals and dolls)
The store bought lice control items are usually a form of pessticide and some people chose not to use them..however even if you use those products, there is no guarantee that they will kill all the eggs, and even with the store bought product, it is still essential to go thru each strand of hair and look for the eggs...or all your work will be in vain.

Apply mayonnaise or other greasy substances to the hair to suffocate the lice and use a nit comb to manually pick them out. (By the way, contrary to popular belief, normal hair washing does NOT get rid of lice, nor does having lice mean you don't wash your hair properly.)

The neighbors had 16 kids in the family, they got head lice every summer. We weren't allowed to play with them, now I know why. She would shave their heads bald every summer, until they were in their teens. Even the girls. And, she run around in a babushka (turban)

keron b's vinegar with oil , any oil but we use a mix of olive, tea tree and lavender. this smothers the nits. leave in conditioners that contain silica, or spray bottle with the oil mix and water.
