I have knocked the plasterboard of my fireplace to re-open it, to put a hole in the wall fire in. However there are two pipes in the wall of the old fire. One which comes ends in the fire and the other pipes which comes in and out backinto the wall.

What could these be, and would i need someone to test the pipes to see if they are no longer in use.

Thanks

There are really only two things I can think they might be. One water lines, but if there are no water tanks or such conected to the pipes that is unlikely. Two, warm air dispering pipes. The whole idea of a fire place is to get warm air to the living area. This is done by the radiant heat exposed to the surface area. The surface area can be increased by running pipes through the upper part, with the openings of the pipes directed to the living area. Thus the warm air from the pipes come out into the living area.

They sound suspiciously like gas pipes - be careful.

Sounds like it was a gas fire place.
