I think people underestimate dogs.
Yes, they miss you. They miss you the instant you leave the house and they are oh, so delighted the instant you come home.
Every day I leave my house to go to work. Everyday my dogs look at me sad, and will look at me sadly over their shoulders as they go lay down when I leave.
There have been times when I've forgotten something and had to go back inside the house only to be greeted like I've been gone for days.
Dogs, they don't care how long your gone - they're just always to happy to have you back.

im not sure just ask my friends neighbour ;)
when i go away on vacation my german shepard goes to my friends house, and she apparently howls continously for the first night, and until around lunch the following day, it isnt because she isnt used to the people or the house because she is there at least 4 times a week. it just that she misses us. from what i understand at first there is howling, then alot of crying and whimpering for the second and third day, after that she calms down. but she doesnt sulk when we get back, i think she just so happy to see us that she forgets to be angry with us. so the answer is yes they do, and as for how long it depends on teh dog in question.

I got a horsie that would get all whiny if I didn't come outside and keep it company after so long. All animals can get like that, not just certain ones. If an animal likes you, and you're seperated for any amount of time, it'll be excited to see you again. How long depends on how much it wants to be around you. It might like to be around all the time, so the very moment you go away it misses you. It might be a day or 2, even months or years. Of course, if it doesn't care for you much or at all, it won't miss you at all most likely. It all depends on how much of a connection there is between you.

Probably as soon as you leave my dog used to act like we had been gone all day even if we just ran to pick up something for dinner for 20 minutes. He is older now so I don't know if he notices those short trips as much but he still misses us when we are gone for hours.

dogs will miss you, they will adapt to their new surroundings - but when they see you again it will be as if no time has passed - they have no concept of time. When the sulk it's just to show to you they're annoyed, they get over it....

My dog gets frantic if we even just walk round to the neighbours house to deliver her shopping! He cries and screams at the window and when we get back in, he climbs up us like a little chimp and wraps himself round our necks. He has got seperation issues big time!

I used to visit someone who had a dog, which was always excited to see me.
I stopped seeing this person for a period of about eight years, and when I saw them again the dog clearly recognised me, and was delighted to see me again.
We always tend to underestimate animals.
