thanks to conley39 for the details/suggestions!!! with trenitalia, i found that i can go from venice to ljubljana for 15 euros, and with the amica promotion i think i can go from florence to venice for 10 euros - if i understood correctly. so, 25 euros is great! the problem is coming back . . . i can't find the same deals. help?

Cheapest and best aren't necessarily the same. Cheapest is 38 euro per person - take a regional train from Florence to Bologna (4.80), transfer to a regional train to Venezia Mestre (8.20), catch a train from Mestre to Ljubljana (25.00). From Mestre there are trains to Ljubljana at 9:15 am (arrives 1:21 pm), or 3:56 pm (arrives 7:42 pm).

You can also get from Florence to Ljubljana by train for 65 euro per person catching the 6:39 pm Eurostar to Monfalcone and transferring to the night train to Ljubljana at 11 pm. there's about a 20 minute layover in Monfalcone. The price is for seats on the night train rather than a cuchette, and the train arrives at Ljubljana a little before 2 am.

You can search for train schedules and options at: http://www.trenitalia.com/en/index.html but not all international trips can be priced.

Besides the caves, Lubljana is a nice city - there's the castle, the Dragon Bridge, some good restaurants, art galleries.
