The fragrance serves to attract animals that can detect it. This can be for the purpose of fertilizing the flower (while gathering nectar and pollen for food) or for the purpose of taking the seed(s) somewhere else in the process of eating the fruit that contains the seed(s). Think of it as advertisement and enticement - exactly the reasons why women often use perfumes.

The translation was lost in a voyage across the Bering Strait, but famous Archeologist Indiana Jones recovered it while deep sea fishing. Around the Caspian Sea. Weird? Yes it is. But its completely true.
