I've noticed quite a few answers suggest NOT tipping waiters because there is a service charge. Waiters are generally so poorly paid and usually depend on the tips to make up a good wage for the tiring and patience trying job they do! We always tip 10% wherever we eat, as long as the waiter is polite, clean and adequately efficient. So don't be mean...put yourself in his/her shoes (bunions and callouses and all!) Don't you agree?

If we get a good waiter or waitress we go above 10%. But we have also been so disappointed that we haven't left anything also.

Mail-men, cashiers, or hotel maids make at least three times what a server does. Servers make $2-4 an hour, and it is an understood part of etiquette for people with BRAINS that tipping is a part of the cost of dining out. Though by definition a tip is never legally required, and its amount is at the discretion of the patron being served, in some circumstances failing to give an adequate tip when one is expected may be considered very miserly, a violation of etiquette, or unethical.

I think 10 % is too cheap. Even I tip more than that. I think the current rule is more like 20% if you have a good server. I will tip 15% if the service is really bad, and I will tip 20% usually.
That being said, I do not tip at fast food restaurants. I do, however, from time to time tip a barista [coffee shop employee], and that is usually giving the difference between what I pay in paper money and what I get in change for what was purchased. So, if I get a $1.50 coffee, I will tip 50 cents.

You just contradicted yourself.
Yes, waiters are paid very poorly. Therefore you should tip. You are right there.
But, I regret to inform you that the standard is 15%.
The IRS makes server claim 15% of their daily food and drink sales. So, if the server sells $500 in food/drink, the IRS expects them to claim/have made $75.
If people only tip 10%, then they would only make $50. Yet, they would be paying taxes on $25 they did not earn.
How would you like to be taxed on a higher bracket, yet never see that money?

To put it simply, those how don't tip are just plain cheap, and to cover this ugly flaw up they lie they and justify it by statements like "why should I pay for a tip? delivering the meal is part of the job." There nothing more that cheap creeps and the world is full of them.

I always double the tax (in CA 7.75%) and add a dollar. Absolutely tip them.... now the people at places like Starbucks and Coldstone? Not so much.... if you think they deserve a tip for making one item in 60 seconds, give your change.

when I walk in a restaurant to eat
I put myself in their shoes,
although I am not a waitress
I often tip, when I pay my tab I say
here is a tip give it to so and so
( waiter ) or ( waitress )
I also agree with you about polite clean

I don't give waiters anymore than I give to the collection plate at church. after all, they were the ones who chose that job. they knew what they were getting into and they can still get out.

.10 % is low............ todays tips are 15 to 20 % of the bill lower end if service isnt good higher end if good .

10% thanks a bunch. We get 3.65 an hour.....work extremely hard to give you a lovely dining experience. 18% is the minimum than if you enjoyed the service, add more.
