Number 1 - Look like honeymooners - leave some confetti in your hair!
Number 2 - dress smartly
Number 3 - drop the idea of an upgrade into the conversation with the check-in staff but don't be pushy......
Number 4 - be polite even if refused

We were upgraded on a BA flight once to Hong Kong - it was our 45th wedding anniversary celebration. The plane was overbooked in cattle class, so they were doing some upgrades anyway, and we were just lucky I guess. Plus as mentioned, we were middle-aged, dressed tidily and told the lady on check in that we were celebrating.
Emirates Business Class is fab - the food is nothing like the tourist menu and the cabin staff know the names of all their passengers.
The worst Commercial Airline for tourist class food is Air Portugal - they call it a "light meal". It's one, day-old, chilled sandwich with a piece of unidentifiable meat inside. If you have to fly TAP - take your own food.

try and blag it at check in, tell them you are on your honeymoon and is there any chance of free upgrade!
i do know people who have actually managed to do it!
make sure you dress up smart though if you want to get into business class, won't let you if you are wearing your shorts and t-shirt with flip flops!

Join the skywards frequent flyer scheme.
And let check-in know you are celebrating, you may be lucky.
If economy is fully booked they will upgrade folk, but they'll start with skyward members first!

Tell them at every opportunity that this is your honeymoon.
However we tried with Virgin Atlantic and did not so much as get a free glass of champagne!!!
PS If you are not already a member, join their flying club, if they have one.

try to find out if any of your friends are working for them. they do staff discounts and special offers. other then that you will be lucky if you can do it without paying for it.
if you are traveling in off peak season. and flight is absolutly empty then you can request cabin staff to move you there.
