Yes, MREs are good for field operations, or if at home...hunting/fishing trips, as well as during disasters. They are vacuum packed.
Going on Ops, I don't eat that many, so have a 'stash' to take home. I always put about 3 in the car during the winter. Ya never know when a snow drift will claim another car. As long as there is heat, waiting on help is just boring.
As many others have stated, they are PACKED with calories! They are meant to 'snack on' over the course of a day. Depending upon the type of MRE you get (yes there are about a handful of different types). There are standard, cold weather, and some other specific environmental types. At any rate, the right MRE in right environment will provide the consumer with all the horsepower needed to complete the mission. To me, the vegetarian ones are best. They have more 'goodies' in them. Also, they don't form 'plugs' as bad either. The best part, no else usually wants those, so more for me!! LOL
As it was also stated, they WILL stop you up!!! Be sure to drink PLENTY of water with them. When you think you have drank enough, drink another quart or two. If you don't drink enough water you will have a VERY good idea of what child birth feels like.

Before they came out with the MRE's they had K-rations I know because when I served in the military back in the 70's I use to eat them and there were some K-Rations that went all the way back to world War II,and they were safe to eat and Obviously I am still alive answering your question.
They are not something you want to eat all the time but when you are in the field or in combat they are the closest thing to a meal until you are able to get to a field kitchen to eat a decent mean so yes they are healthy for our military to eat.

When I was in the Army we went to the Mojave desert for training, I ate 9 MRE's a day! They are packed full of calories but are made to be compact so I had a hard time when they were trying to come out!

My definition of healthy is good for the body. And that being the case, YES, MREs are healthy for you. They are packed with calories and nutrients. They're a sustaining ration if you were faced with weeks of no food. They also provide enough calories to keep your energy up when you are running continous operations. To the average person one a day is plenty!

Just healthy as anything else that is considered food nowadays. Im being saracastic by the way lol.
But hey if your hungry , you'll eat it. But like most fast food and other junk that we eat most folks arent thinking about how good it is for you. Not that im comparing MREs to fast food or anything. Its made to have lots of protien and to keep you going.

No they are not.
1) You will gain monster weight.
2) They will constipate you.
3) Do you really believe the government cares about the health of a military person. Not!

In the field, yes, as you are burning up the 3000 calories with exercises and training. In a garrison operation, no, because you will not burn the excessive calories. However garrison food is not that healthy either.

Yes, but too many for too long jacks up your system. The cheese itself will stop you up, the gum is a laxative, and EVERY meal is 3000 calories. A full day of food in one bag (though it doesn't feel like it where your stomach is concerned). For short durations though (a max of a month), all potential side effects are very mild.

Very healthy. And NO they don't stop you up. They are 95% efficient, which means your body uses 95% of everthing in it. The is very little to be pooped out. I lost weight eating them in Desert Storm.
