the Abomination of Desolation (when the antichrist stands in the rebuilt Jewish temple proclaiming to be God)
has not happened yet.
the antichrist will be revealed 3 1/2 years before the battle of armageddon (that is, midway into Daniel's 70th week).
though the building of the 3rd temple is close, they don't have the go-ahead to build it yet. they are however, drawing up the plans for the 3rd temple & have decided to build it off-site like they did in the OT, so that when they get the go-ahead, they can construct it within a year.
the sanhedren has been re-established & have been having meetings. they have even obtained a herd of sheep to sacrifice. the priests have been trained what to do when the temple is built. all the furnishings & utensils have been re-constructed. all they need is the actual building.
however, before we know who the antichrist is, we still have to experience the 6th trumpet - the war that kills 2 billion people.
true we are now fighting a war along the Euphrates River w/ about 160,000 U.S. troops fighting there, but we have not seen the flashpoint of that war yet.

Why could it not be fulfilled?
If the Antichrist is Islamic he'd go to the Dome Of The Rock to worship.
It's the last known site of the Holy of Holies.
Oh yea, the fundamentalist Christians expect the pope or someone else they don't like to be the Anticrist, they forgot all about Islam when they forgot there were other religions in the world. It's an interesting piece of prophacy.
See I do read the bible, unlike the hypocrits who claim the religion.

Jesus was prophecying about the Destruction of Jerusalem, which took place in 70 A.D. , just as Christ predicted---Matthew 24:1--16.
This prophecy is not narrow but broad---in other words Jesus is speaking to both the early disciples and you and I today. This why this chapter has many interpretations because of its structure.. Jesus was speaking to the disciples and he was telling them more than they needed to know since he did not stop with the prophecy about the destruction of Jerusalem, but continued to discribe the end of the world and God's last day church in the end of time!!! Wow! What a stretch. This is a progressive prophecy.
