I believe that donuts and coffee are cheap and easy to get. I would also guess that donut shops give discounts to police officers, in exchange for them being around (thus increasing security).

I'm not offended! I like donuts, but you won't see me eating one when I'm working!! Too many people have camera phones these days!! ;)
BTW, donut shops were one of the few places open all night back in the day. It was about the only place a cop could get coffee & a bite to eat in the middle of the night.

The Cops donut thing is an old wives tale that goes back to the early 1900's.It's a joke in one sense but donuts and coffee were and are fast, cheap and acessable.Ever try to eat a meal and answer crime calls at the same time? Not possible...This is kinda like the people I used to pull over for traffic violations who would ask if I had a "Quota" to meet.I has 2 favorite answers.
#1 No Madam/Sir."They let me write as many as I want."
#2 No Madam/Sir "There is no quota, but if I write a few more I win a Toaster Oven.........
Works every time.Good for a few laughs....

I hadn't noticed that you posted 4 questions on the same topic, so I'll copy/paste my answers here and there.... LOL.... Only because I love giving my 2 cents for 2 points.
I wonder how long that stereotype has been around. I think this started in small towns where police were allowed (encouraged) to stop by for a cup of coffee and a snack while on their patrols, free of charge. A way for businesses to show their appreciation and it gave officers a chance to get a snack during times when most businesses were closed. ?? Just guessing here.
Hubby says it started with "Car 54 Where are you?" about a doughnut shop.
Now, I have the utmost respect for the police and everything that they do for us everyday.... but I had to giggle when I saw this question because it reminded me of something I had seen on rotten.com
No offense, it's just a silly picture...

It's kind of funny, though, isn't it? LOL
ETA: If this offends ANYONE, and I get more than 3 thumbs down, I will delete the link.

It was always a running joke that if you could not find a cop that they were at a all night donut's shop drinking coffee, rather than on the job getting the bad guys... that was always used as an explanation as to why one was never around when you needed them.

DO you know I have always wanted to know that question. AND, it only seems to be American Cops that eat donuts. Here in the U.K there isn't the donut thing going on. Don't know why. It is a question I have always wanted to know the answer to, don't know why people would be offended or anything. Wish I knew the answer though!!!

A lot of people look for things to set them off. People like drama. Also, a lot of people automatically assume people are out to offend everyone. Because our culture is so apathetic to others lately and it's getting worse everyday, people jump to conclusions. This man just wasn't the type of person to get offended easily. It's rare but it is possible to find someone who is just laid back and down to earth. Now if you weren't serious it would have been an offensive question but who knows whats genuine these days. *sigh*
